Connecting 2000 Pro and XP Pro

I have 2000 Pro machine and a XP Pro machine connected to my network. They both have internet access but I'd like to file share.

I have set up user accounts on both machines and have tried to login using those user accounts but I can't get them to see each other on the network.

The XP machine is my brother's from school and it has the Novell Clients software that you use to login. Is that screwing it up? I made sure both computers are on the same workgroup, but still no luck. Help appreciated.

I can see my XP machine on both my 2000 Pro and 98 machines but it says "network path not accessible" when I double click the icon.

I can't see either 98 or 2000 on the XP machine, however the correct workgroup shows up.

I can ping their IP's fine. When I try to ping the XP machine on the 2000 machine using its name it says "unknown host." Likewise on the XP machine.

Make sure both computers are on same workgroup. Then go into control panel, user accounts, and enable guest account/login.

Then go to your drives, right click, select sharing...viola! Networked!

I already the account situation on both computers taken care of.

Why wouldn't it work with just TCP/IP? It should. Why would Netbeui work but not TCP/IP?

The fragile network browser scheme that Microsoft has used for workgroup name resolution frequently gets confused and just stops working. I've had it work for months on client's network, then adding a machine or booting in a different order breaks it. NETBEUI periodically broadcasts it's name to all machines, so it handily avoids this issue. Unless your LAN has 100's of nodes, the amount of traffic from the NETBEUI broadcasts is a non-issue performance wise, and it does fix the network name resolution issue in most cases.

I know Microsoft and even some folks here claim that you only need TCP/IP, but the real world sometimes gets in the way of theoretical solutions. 😀
