Connecting 2 PC's thru cable modem

I'm not that familiar with networking, so bear with me.

I have Cable internet service with Optimum Online using my desktop. I also have a centrino laptop that has a wireless connection. Is it possible to hop onto the cable modem wirelessly with my laptop?

When I open the wireless netoworks on my laptop it shows different connections but i'm unable to connect since theiy are secured networks. I would just like to have a cable connection with both computers.

You need a wireless router. The router will split your internet connection to the desktop (wired) and your laptop (wirelessly). They go for about $20-$30.
