connecting 2 computers with ethernet cable

Why is when you connect two just through ethernet cable you need to use a cross over type ethernet cable? I heard with mac computer, you can just use a regular ethernet cable to connect two mac computers. Is that true?

Unless Macs have autosensing ports, I don't know why you would be able to use a regular ethernet cable with them... but I'm not familiar with Macs.

The short explanation is because the pinout of the cables has to be reversed, so that the data sent out of one computer's pins will arrive at the right pins on the other computer.
