Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy wants NASCAR officials to reconsider calling one of the sport's upcoming events, the NRA 500.

Think that's because Texan's are always so deferential to East Coast Politicians?

Murphy has been sued for nonpayment of his mortgage and non-payment of rent, and has also failed to pay taxes when due on several occasions. In 2007, Chase Home Finance sued for foreclosure against Murphy, whose campaign initially responded by claiming that Murphy had missed "a couple of mortgage payments." Murphy claimed that he did not know he was in default until legal proceedings started. Murphy received a loan at the rate of 4.99% from Webster Bank in 2008 to consolidate his previous mortgages after being sued for foreclosure. At the time of this loan, Murphy was serving on the House Financial Services Committee. In 2008, Webster Bank's political action committee made numerous donations to Murphy's campaign and in 2005 and 2006, Murphy worked for Webster as an attorney. In 2008, Murphy voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program which Webster received $400 million in 2009. Murphy's 2012 Republican opponent Linda McMahon accused him of receiving what she called "special interest loans," and called on Murphy to release his financial records. Bank officials and outside experts claim there was nothing improper about the loans made to Murphy.
Hmmm...

Heh... maybe Texas should rename the race.

The "Hey, Chris Murphy, your state's gun laws suck 500" has a nice ring to it :)

I think Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy should concern himself more with CT and the nation's business and less with Texas' business.

He can ask, but it'll never happen.

IIRC, Eddie Gossage, the track owner said he would discuss changing the name of the race if any of the sponsors had a problem with the name...so far none have....

It's a NASCAR race in Texas sponsored by the NRA. Saying you have a problem with the name is akin to burning Christ in effigy.

Technically, Eddie is just the GM/President of the facility/track. Speedway Motorsports Inc. is the owner of that place plus several other facilities around the US (Atlanta, Charlotte, etc.). Bruton Smith is the CEO.

<<---is a big fan of all kinds of racing.

I think Nascar would have more irate fans if they DID change the name than if they didn't. So why would they bother?

And to hell with Murphy.

The track folks need to invite Senator Murphy to the race to act as Master of Ceremonies. That way he can get first hand knowledge of what people think of him.
