Connected to WiFi router, but can't get on internet?????

OK, so I bought my in-laws a usb wifi card as their old one broke.

It's an Airlink 101 and once I got it setup here at my house (I keep our networks setup the same so that laptops can connect at either house) and everything worked fine.

Well, now my mo-in-law says she can't get it working. I finally got her setup to where the things is transmitting and receiving but she can't get on the internet. Her hard-wired pc is getting on just fine and obviously the WiFi router's working.

What am I missing??? 😕

TIA

The obvious question is: how do you know if it's transmitting and receiving if you can't connect to the internet? The "connected" messages on different wireless cards / software can be very misleading. Sometimes they say connected when they've negotiated but haven't actually given a passkey and been "connected".

I'd say, if you're questioning it, start by turning OFF all encryption and passkeys and see if the card can connect that way and you get internet. If it does, then move back to turning encryption on.

It sounds like an encryption / passkey mismatch to me.

Hmmm.......okay.....I'll have to check into it.

I'm pretty sure the router (they're using my old router) hangs on to those network keys no matter what) but I'll have to see 'cuz I had the usb card's key setup right as it worked perfectly on *my* network.

The UI of the wireless usb card is a POS! I might just have XP handle the wireless, but it sounds like I'm gonna have to drive up to the in-laws to straighten this out.

Arggghh!! :disgust:
