my router does this all the time. why and how do I fix this problem (without restarting the router).

Power down router
Power down modem
Wait 60 seconds
Power up modem

Power up router

Power up PC

This solves almost all home broadband problems.

Do you have other PCs? If not then you can change the DNS settings on your PC instead of on your router.

leave gateway to your router IP but change DNS to what effowe suggested.

You can use nslookup.exe to troubleshoot name server problems.

If your PC cannot find a site using its default nameserver try typing server 4.2.2.2 and then looking up a site. If that works then placing that for your primary DNS should fix the problem.

Are you on comcast? They kill dns requests sometimes when you are downloading torrents. Shut your torrents off, wait a min and see if it comes back on.

Also make sure you haven't got a hijack put into your internet settings (under internet options > proxy server) or goofy hosts settings.

And if that was the issue try reducing your max connected peers/seeds when you get back online. Many ISP's find p2p by checking for crazy high connection counts and then 'discipline' you for it.
