The Connect 3D works. The guy who made the GTO2 mod confirms that:
"Not only the Sapphire GTO² can be modded, the regular GTO cards from Connect 3D are also moddable"

Success 27 : 1 Failed (last update Oct 25 2005).

Cost saving tip: this card is cheaper than the GTO2. The GTO2 will reach no more than 10% better clock speed than the Connect (let's say 540 x 500), but it costs 30 to 40% more.

EDIT: Success rate updated.

You can get a refurb from Chief Value for $150 shipped. I'm pretty sure that since the discovery of this mod is fairly new, that none of these refurbs are failed moddable cards, since I doubt anyone knew of it then. So, as long as Newegg doesn't give you a dead card, there's a good chance that might do it for you.

Would you change the heatsink? Because the Connect 3D X700 Pro I bought on sale has a weak heatsink fan and the GPU can reach 84'C (at stock). Go figure. I only wanted to buy a card while I'm waiting for the Geforce 8 or whatever to come out next year anyway.

Yes, I would go for an ATI Silencer. In my past experience with the X800 series the ATI Silencer would reduce the temperatures from 75C to 60C under load.

bump for the real, accurate and first thread.

Funny part is that the clone thread has double the number of posts and incorrect info.

I changed my heatsink with the Zalman VF-700Cu, got my idle temps down to 35C@ 540 core 560 mem. Haven't tried putting load on it yet, but I doubt theyll get very high.
