Connect WRT54G to another router?

I have a router that I cannot get internet access on locally. I do however have another wireless network that has Internet on it. I did some reading around, and it seems like flashing with the Sveasoft firmware is the only option. I just bought the WRT54G and its like version 6 or something, and the firmware only supports up to 2.2.

Is there any other way to do this, or is it safe to try the firmware?

You don't need to flash your router to a 3rd party firmware in order to access the internet.

http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

This is the hard way.

The easy way would be to just connect an ethernet cable to your WRT54G's WAN port and the other end to the working wireless router's LAN port.

Because the company I am working for does not want a lan jack plugged into any non company hardware. However they have a wireless network set up for us to use. So i want to setup my wireless router to connect to thier wireless router so i can get internet on it. The reason i have another network anyway is because i have network area storage hooked up to it.

I dont know why i felt the need to answer you, but i kinda want to get an answer for this. Thanks for the false accusation though.

Don't you think your company has a reason for not giving you physical access to their equipment? The IT guys would be pretty pissed off if they found out one of their employee is messing with their wireless network.

To answer your original question, V6 has only 2MB of memory which is not enough for standard linux file.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrt54g

You can try the micro Linux version, but I'm not sure if V6 is still built on Linux.

sorry, I'm going to agree with Cloudstrife....

Get permission/help from your IT guys, as this is very much PUTTING YOUR JOB AT RISK. We would fire someone for doing something like this, although you couldn't get a WRT with any 3rd party F/W to connect to our wireless net anyway.

Ill check it out, thanks.

BTW, I dont really get why people are trying to tell me that Im doing something wrong. I am a consultant and our team pretty much has control over the sub. that we are auditing. IT is non-existant, and we were already told we could hook up...so just relax.

Cloud Strife, if you are just going to be a big flamer, stfu.

Anyways, for the ACTUAL answer to the question, install DD-WRT.

Use this guide to install: http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/ow.asp?WRT54G5%5FCFE

Use this guide to set it up as a bridge: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged

He wasn't accusing you; he was asking a question; which considering the relatively sparse information you provide (and the typical mentality of ATOT wireless interest surrounding that sort of question) he's asking the first question that likely came to mind for anyone responsibly skilled in wireless or a professional in the field.

Cloud Strife was flaming? Mabye someone's flame meter needs some calibration. That ain't flames where I come from.

Your question is the same question that an unregulated, unauthorized, illegal activity would be comprised of. You have a tenuous grasp of the technology and explain it thus so why would anyone here assume that you also understand the implication of what you're attempting to do?

You're wanting assistance to do something that can result in legal implication and perhaps a compromise of your job. If we assist you without knowing more about your intentions or environment then we foster the same ignorance that considers this thread as being riddled with flame bait.

You're not handling a simple thread on the matter; much less I'd opine that you shouldn't be messing with the wireless. Now THAT borders on flame :p

And a poor demonstration it is; what with all the grammatical errors and errant punctuation. Don't get me started on spelling. Spell check is not my friend.

Aside from the segue; do you see that you're not being flamed but queried for more information in order to provide a reasonable response? There are not the flames and accusations that have been exclaimed.

There is not difference in briding wireless and plugging into wired....if they don't want you doing one, they don't want you doing the other. Tell them your needs, and then run a wire. If you are consulting, and there is no IT, I don't understand who is restricting access to the wired network.

Its a couple of IT guys, and I have permission to connect to the wireless network. They dont want us to connect to the LAN since its not firewalled against our computers, however the Wireless LAN provides a firewall.

Im glad that everyone is so concerned with the details. I should have a lawyer present when making posts from now on.

So which is it; IT doesn't exist or you don't care to run it past the IT guys? And what kind of auditor are you if you're seeking to go outside of proper channels to perform your work? If it is indeed a couple of IT guys, then quite your noob tinkering and respect their system.

You don't like forum members asking for background on what and why you're asking? This is the Networking/IT Dept. of AT; what exactly were you expecting?

maybe its just me, but whenever we have auditors come to our building (mostly for penetration testing), I set them up with whatever they need to get the job done. Be it wireless access, wired ports, extra switches, printers, ect.

The local IT should be setting this up for you...if your on their network hooking up to their equipment, it should be their problem. I sure as hell wouldnt let a customer bring in a SOHO wireless device, possibly flashed with non-oem firmware, and let them set it up the way they want. It would have to pass IA, follow the set wireless guidlines, be FIPS certified, ect, ect. It's just bad practice.

You have to realize that most of us here are the "local it guys". We are just trying to prevent undue stress on one of our own. All too often users take matters into their own hands without having the slighest clue of the consequences.

Some organizations have open wireless networks for this sort of purpose -- they aren't bridged to their internal networks, and just allow Internet access for their guests to "dial home", etc.

Yes, you are; judging by your comments, questions and overall inability to answer questions in a reasonable manner. You still haven't answered my question. You said "IT is non-existant" in one post and then state that it's run by "a couple of IT guys" in another post.

Currently a systems admin and resource manager for an IT consulting firm. I've logged 5 years in Novell & Microsoft systems administration, 2 years Level 1&2 IT Helpdesk, 2yrs contracted to NASA Space Center Houston Texas building same phase power switching units for their in-flight monitoring systems, 5 years underground robot inspection systems, 5 years guided cruise missile systems in the U.S. Navy including service in '91 Gulf War. Certainly nothing special compared to some of the stellar IT Professionals and self-taught Wizards of Geekdom here in AT but it's enough to get me by.

You?
