How do I connect a ipad to my home network? I haven't bought one but would like to know ahead of time if I can connect it to my home network and play music or look at pictures stored on other computers, etc.

Also, my printer is connected to my home network. How can I for example create a document or if I am looking at something on line with the ipad,,, can that screen, or item be printed out???

Connecting to your network, assuming it's wireless, is the same as with a laptop. You locate your network name and enter the password. From that point on the iPad will connect to your network when you are in range.

Printing can be hit or miss. There are several options when printing from a phone or a tablet, some work well others do not. Getting a new printer that support airprint and e-print is a good idea. Otherwise there are apps that can allow printing but it does have some restrictions so make sure you understand the limitations.

You are assuming the person is broadcasting their SSID. That is a very big mistake, in the assumption and in broadcasting.

There is no reason not to broadcast your SSID. Anyone who is using a program to try to crack wireless networks is going to figure out what your SSID is anyway. Hiding the SSID will keep your network hidden from the average person, but a WPA2 key will keep them and anyone else from connecting anyway.

And yet the world is littered with bored amateurs just dying to try.

I have not heard anyone, except you, advocate broadcasting the SSID.

There are 12 SSIDs broadcasting within range of my dining room table.

One is not even authenticated.

I use StreamToMe for file sharing. You install the server software on the computer containing your media, and the app on the iPad. Works for pictures, music, videos...
