Connect to a LAN over the internet?

My friend has a small 3 computer LAN at his home. His LAN is networked with a switch, and it connects to the internet through a DSL modem/router.

My computer at home is connected to the net with @home cable. We are collaborating on some 3D modeling and would like to have access to each other's hard drives. I'm running Win2k and he has win98se.

Is it possible for me to become part of his LAN? We would like to share files on one of his computers.

Just have him enable file sharing on the outbound NIC and log into his computer as if it were a place in your "Network Neighborhood" (using its IP address) -- simple as that.
