Connect HDMI to Optical with Audio and Video?

A Christmas gift for my fiance's father was a Blue-Ray player that only has HDMI and coaxial output for audio and video. He has a high end receiver that is a few years old. The receiver only has optical and coaxial connections. Is it possible for an adapter to send the HDMI audio and video into the optical of the receiver? Are there any other options to get 5.1 sound from the Blue-Rey player to the receiver?

Uh, why not connect the coaxial digital output of the Blu-Ray player to the coaxial digital input of the receiver? Coaxial digital and optical digital connections transmit the exact same SPDIF signal, just over different mediums.

Oh, I missed that part.

For video, just connect the Blu-Ray player directly to the TV with an HDMI cable. If the TV doesn't have an HDMI connector then use a component (not composite) cable. For 5.1 sound, connect the Blu-Ray player to the receiver using the coaxial digital connections.
