Connect CRT to DVI port w/ a converter?

Most of the video cards I'm looking at for my new system have 2 DVI ports. I currently do not have an LCD and I'm not sure if my next monitor will be an LCD or a CRT.

Is the signal you get when using the little dongle to connect a CRT to the DVI port as good as you get if the card has a dedicated VGA port?

Just as good - same signal, simply a different connector. The adapter takes pins on a DVI port and converts them to the VGA 15-pin D-sub pinout.

Now, this is overly simplified since this really only applies to DVI-I ports... DVI-D ports are digital only... DVI-I are digital and analog... just make sure you know what you're connecting your CRT monitor to.

Most video card DVI outputs are DVI-I (at least, that's what I believe). For display devices, make sure to check, they run both ways (-I and -D).

(I'm running my CRT on a 6600GT w/ dual DVI-I outs... using DVI to VGA adapters.)
 
This is something I have wondered about too. So it should be okay even when the analog bandwidth is maxed out at 400mhz (2048x1536 at 85hz)?
