Connect 5870 to 3007wfp-hc

Hey guys, having a bit of trouble here. Looking to the experts because my google-fu is failing me.

I just got the 5870 eyefinity 6 edition and I am trying to hook up my dell 3007 HC. I bought a cable that is mini DP to dual link DVI thinking it would be all I need but my max res is 800p 😛.

Do I need to buy an active adapter? If so wtf is the point of the mini DP to DL DVI?

My poor reading comprehension. I think you may need an active adapter then. Some sort of special fangled gadget to push the high signal for that resolution through.

I don't understand why they even make a mini DP to dual link DVI cable then.

Card came with mini DP to HDMI adapter, I wonder if I can get this HDMI to DVI-D adapter and the use my original dual link cable?

Update for anyone that cares:
$12 miniDP to Dual Link DVI cable did not work, max res 1280x800

$12 HDMI to Dual Link DVI adapter (miniDP to HDMI came with card) did not work, max res 1280x800

$75 refurbished (normally ~$90) Accell Active miniDP to Dual Link DVI adapter works perfectly, runs 2560x1600

Would love to know why powered adapter is needed to make this work. I guess it's not just a simple case of lining up the pins.
