Building a new system with E6400, P5B Deluxe WiFi MB, 2GB Corsair 1024, 500GB Sata HD, 22" Viewsonic, and cannot decide on a video card.

As you can see this is a pretty high end system and you would think I would be trying to decide between GTS or GTX, but I just don't play alot of games. Now this system may make me alot more interested in doing so.

I do alot of AutoCad and Rendering work.

Help me with logic and thought process to decide on this.

I have all the parts on order and need to get moving on this.

IF you don't play a lot of games AND you need to save some money...X1900. If you don't need to save much money then 8800GTS. The 8800 would last you a bit longer probably, and is a DX10 card...which doesn't mean much right now...but probably will a bit later on.

There really isn't a need to convince yourself you need the higher card when you don't game much or if at all.

Think of all the food, clothing, toys, gadgets, bills you can buy/pay off with that saved money.

About 2 years ago I was in the same boat as you when I was upgrading my computer, and decided to go "Mid-range" rather than "high-end" and saved myself $700 in the process. I used that money to redecorate my room, buy a fishtank, get a personal fridge, get some nice wall art, upgrade my cell phone, buy some new prescription glasses and finally get a new pillow for my bed. I don't regret that decision one bit.

Just take a step back a moment and prioritize your upgrade, and then everything will be clear.

No point in a high end card if you not gaming.
As for rendering, a card designed for that would likely be better...

I'd recommend getting both, & then sending the 8800 GTS to me as a charitable tax deductible gift

Thanks for the all the thoughts and advice.

Regarding the charitable deduction comment. I would love to do that for you but I have a kid in college and right now he is getting all my charity and more, if you know what I mean.

Actually, after I get this rig going I think he is going to pitch a fit when he sees how well it renders his 3D stuff.

You could also consider somthing in between the two ... I'd suggest considering an X1950 Pro which will out-perform the GT in 3D apps & the occasional game, or you could also consider a 7900GS ... both will run about $160.

The only other thing to think about is that while ATI drivers are for the most part very good these days (in many cases better then Nvidia), Open-GL is still one place where Nvidia is considerably better, so if you do any 3D rendering using it, you would be better off with them.

MSI X1950 Pro @ $156 + $7 shipping

EVGA 7900GS @ $160 + $6 shipping ($15 MIR)
