Conics in cars: Part II

Continued from previous thread

Basically, I'm doing a project in math and it has to be on conics. I don't think this includes all the conic sections like a circle, more like paraboloids and such.

From that thread, I learned that headlights are paraboloids, and that the pistons are elliptical. CV Joints and wheel bearings were also mentioned. Keep in mind I have to write a paper on this and present information about this, so it needs to be something with a decent amount of information.

I search, and information on the headlights is easy to find, but I couldn't find anything on the piston shape, cv joints, and wheel bearings and their relation to conics.

Other than headlights, where can I get information on the other three? I've searched google already and haven't had much luck which is why I'm asking here. I'd like to do something on the piston being elliptical, but I need more information on it, can you guys help me find some?

Oh by the way, those who will complain saying I'm doing this on last day, I'm not, we have to sign up for our topics tomorrow. The reason I'm avoiding headlights is that someone is already doing that who happens to be a friend, so I wouldn't like to just sign up before him and leave him with something he doesn't like.

Conic, a section of a cone cut at an angle. If that is the given, how bout this 🙂

Camshaft lobe design fits that description to a "T". You will find a lot of info.
PM me if you need web sites, I got several books I can break out that have links..
