I can't buy into the idea that anyone that works in the white house is immune from having to answer to congress on matters that rise to a certain level of importance. I think illegal matters rise to that level.

Executive privlege does not apply if the executive does not want it to apply. The POTUS is not the same as a doctor/lawyer when it comes to these kinds of things. Once a president is out of office, all decisions regarding the executive branch are then the SOLE responsibility of the new POTUS. Former presidents have no authority...they just retain an advisory role to the current POTUS by default.

So now you're asking me to prove a negative, nice. That should tell you straight out that your argument is in trouble.

Posts like this tend to make me think you don't understand Congress, politics, or deal making very well. The reasons these issues aren't 'resolved' isn't due to lack of negotiating time, lack of planning time, or anything else even remotely similar. They aren't resolved because powerful interests want very different things, and frequently those things are mutually exclusive. It's not like there isn't time on the legislative calender for them, there isn't political will to legislate something on them right now. I'm sure it sounds easy to say "WELL THEY SHOULD JUST GET TOGETHER AND WORK SOMETHING OUT", but the world doesn't work that way.

In fact Congress should have little choice other than to pursue this, as they have a constitutional oversight function that they must perform. I'm sorry if you think that's "BS". So yes, they will (hopefully) continue to perform their constitutional duties, and it will in no way impede passage of legislation on any of the things you mentioned. There are plenty of other things that will do that way before they have to free up committee time for them.

Really though, I again must reiterate that you should be happy they are doing this. This is a small step to restoring the balance of power between the legislature and the executive branches. The balance is so ridiculously far tilted towards the executive now that it is approaching a serious danger to our system of government. Isn't righting that just a LITTLE more important than passing education reform?

There is a saying that goes something like "those who like sausage and the law should never watch either being made". I don't think you're the type that can stomach how our legislative system works, so maybe you shouldn't look.
