WASHINGTON - If Congress passes an energy bill, Americans may see more daylight-saving time.

Lawmakers crafting energy legislation approved an amendment Wednesday to extend daylight-saving time by two months, having it start on the last Sunday in March and end on the last Sunday in November.

"Extending daylight-saving time makes sense, especially with skyrocketing energy costs," said Rep. Fred Upton (news, bio, voting record), R-Mich., who along with Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., co-sponsored the measure.

The amendment was approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee that is putting together major parts of energy legislation likely to come up for a vote in the full House in the coming weeks.

"The more daylight we have, the less electricity we use," said Markey, who cited Transportation Department estimates that showed the two-month extension would save the equivalent of 10,000 barrels of oil a day.

The country uses about 20 million barrels of oil a day.

Argh a .05% decrease. Whoop de doo. Is that worth it, compared to the increase in traffic accidents that occur from drivers having to drive into the sun 4 times a year, instead of the 2 it could be with no daylight savings?

Can't we just shut down the entire country for a week. No cars allowed on the roads at all. Only public transportation and emergency vehicles. Who wouldn't want a week off from work. That would probably save about 15million barrels a day x 5 = lots of oil!

Here's an idea...build some nuclear power plants! That would reduce the amount of oil we use for power generation. Not all 20billion gallons of oil goes to cars.

We can't close the country we are open 24/7 and we have no way to lock the doors. They could just come in whenever and take all our stuff!

Sooo what? We gain an extra week before the apocylypse? ;)

I think its a good idea to extend it... frankly, anytime our government pushes a bill to CONSERVE ENERGY I think its a splendid idea... we don't get to see a lot of those bills reallly. Hopefully this is a first step in a serious of energy conservation measures. I think that is simply the smartest thing our government can do to deal with higher energy costs.

What, like I don't go home and turn on the TV and run the dishwasher, the dryer, the stove, the A/C, the computer...

Somehow this idea seems half-baked to me. Oh, but it's congress. Nevermind.

How is that two months extra? Right now it's the first sunday in April and the last sunday in October - that's like a month and a week.

Only 3% of our power comes from oil. What are you going to do with spent nuclear rods? We have 2000 tons of spent nucear rods a year that need long term storage.

nuclear power is a stupid idea, it doesn't actually solve the problem. and the waste created from the plants is far worse then burning oil. the actual solution is the research into better methods of energy use and the outlaw of worthless sh!t like race car driving and SUV's.

if you want to know more, read this, its prolly the only inteligent thing to come out of rollingstone in about 10 years.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/st...?pageid=rs.Politics&pageregion=single1

they do not howerver mention that he middle east doesn't really care about oil, their main usage for it in the future will be to trade for clean water, as their population grows their need for it will ever so increase, but as we all know, its a desert out there, and they dont have allot. its the main reason the palistine conflict is happening, its only partly religious, its also majorly water greed. that and this article doesn't mention the oil in Russia and the newly descovered South China sea oil.

3% = 600million barrels of oil a day. And our power needs are ever expanding. Every little bit helps.

As for nuclear rods, I seem to recall a giant storage facility under a desolate mountain in the Nevada desert that has been under construction but is continuously blocked from use by the enviro lobby.

Besides, we need more glass.

Why is it that farmers, rather than them getting up an hour earlier (and quitting an hour early) to avoid losing sunlight , they make the rest of the god damn country do it instead?!
[/rant]

That being said, it would be NICE to have a GOOD reason for daylight savings time. saving energy is always good, but quick fixes usually aren't. Maybe if we were less dependent on oil we wouldn't have a problem? maybe they should focus more on reducing that 20 billion barrels a day instead of two lousy months of extra daylight

Actually, I haven't played it in over a year and my response had nothing to do with SimCity since I hadn't even thought about it since you brought it up.
