Nevada takes dubious jobless title from Michigan
http://money.cnn.com/2010/06/18/news/economy/state_unemployment/

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Nevada's jobless rate hit a record high last month and and is now the highest in the nation, the first time in four years that Michigan doesn't hold that distinction, according to a government report released Friday.

The Silver State's unemployment rate climbed to 14% in May, the highest in the state since 1976 when the Labor Department began collecting the data. It was up from 13.7% in April.

Meanwhile, joblessness slipped to 13.6% from 14% the previous month in Michigan, which has been ravaged by the struggles of the auto industry. The state has been the leader in unemployment rate since April 2006.

During the last year, Nevada has lost a net total of more than 29,000 jobs, and posts the highest percentage increase in unemployment at 2.5%.
What if there's no fix for high unemployment?

"So much of Nevada's economy is tied to the gaming industry and housing sector, which continue to weigh on Nevada's labor market across the board," said Mark Vitner, senior economist at Wells Fargo. "Consumer spending on travel and leisure is still in a pullback, and while the housing market is no longer in a free fall, there are still a lot of vacant homes in Nevada."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., also said in a statement that mounting unemployment in the state is a sign that Nevada continues to suffer from extreme economic conditions.

"This increase in our unemployment rate only emphasizes the need to diversify our state's economy and create jobs," said Reid, who is in a difficult fight for re-election.

Though it's still the second highest in the nation, Michigan's unemployment rate has improved after peaking at 14.5% in December.

"Auto sales and production are up, and that has helped generate a little improvement in Michigan," said Vitner, highlighting that the state added 4,500 manufacturing jobs in May, likely due to hiring at auto plants.

Meanwhile, a majority of U.S. states welcomed lower unemployment rates last month, the report said.

A total of 37 states and the nation's capital posted declines in jobless rates in May on a monthly basis. Unemployment increased in six states and seven states reported no changes.

On an annual basis, the job market is still sluggish. Joblessness climbed in 31 states and in Washington, D.C., from a year earlier, and only eased in 17 states.
What happened to all the companies that Nevada poached from California?

Nevada is largely Las Vegas right? From what I've heard Las Vegas is a terrible place to live and work. Think about the kind of people that would be attracted to live there. In boom the best people it could get were property speculators and people that wanted to work in casinos.

Gambling industry is hurting right now. Perhaps it is time for a bailout. They afterall, employ about 3 million people across the country. More than the auto industry we partially own.

Nevada experienced a MASSIVE influx of people from ~1995-2005 because of cheap housing and lots of jobs at the times in Vegas. Not surprising that when that bubble burst there'd be a whole lot of people left jobless. Vegas leads the nation in foreclosure rates last time I checked too.

Which companies did NV poach from CA? I bet many of them are still here. Intuit, Microsoft, Barnes and Noble, Sherwin Williams, etc still have major presences in North Nevada. Hell, Microsoft generates more revenue in Reno than they do from any other place on the globe.

Nevada's job losses aren't in technical fields, they're in gaming (due to a lack of tourism in a bad economy), construction, and other low-skill fields.

Hell, in this "worst economy EVAR" I've changed jobs twice in the past 5 months with multiple offers each time. Skills = jobs, it's just that most Nevadans gots no skeelz.

They really should include stats other than just a % for these reports. I would like to see unemployment rate in relation to education level. Then some people may figure out if they get off their ass and stop complaining about the govt not helping them, and goto school (or learn something other than passing out drinks in a casino or pounding nails), they can get a job.

During the Nevada boom, mainly fuel by housing, there was influx of workers, now that the housing market collapsed before Obama was elected, those not smart enough or mobile enough are largely stuck with too many unemployed chasing far too few jobs.

In such stinking employment markets, the grass is always greener else where. As for those that stay, many become dependent on Government services, and since they vote too, its not good news for the GOP in Nevada by that analysis.

Vegas is my retirement plan. When I decide I've had enough of the rat race I want to move to Vegas and be a lounge singer. I want to be that sleazy old drunk pervert playing the piano in a dive bar. It's the perfect place for a guy like me.

I know a few small business owners who are still entertaining the idea of moving to Nevada, outside Las Vegas. They can pretty much do the same exact business cheaper, they're e-tailers.

I'm pretty sure the auto-industry paid back their loans with interest.

The idea of having some haven in a desert that relays solely on overpriced drinks, an airplane rides and slot machines for it's income isn't going to last.

All my friends by the end of high school figured out that blackjack, craps, slot machines while may make you a few bucks, that's only in the short run. In the long-run, you will lose and Vegas wasn't built on winners.

As time goes on, information will spread. Parents will become better, and we'll finally begin to realize they're are easy ways to make money and if we want to have a good time, there's always the local bar that's only five minutes a way.

Nevada is a gamblers' haven, and not just in the casinos. It also extended to the housing market, which became horribly over built and over priced- utterly non-sustainable. So there were some big winners and some big losers.

Boom and bust creates those opportunities in ways that steady sustainable growth doesn't. The people at the top of the Nevada economic food chain like it just the way it is, because hard times don't affect them personally except in the abstract... If anything, they'll be scooping up the bargains when the price of housing falls far enough for it to become profitable to buy. They're the ones with cash on hand, after all...
