confusion over SAMSUNG XP941 +maximus VI Gene

hi all,
i was looking to buy SAMSUNG XP941 to use with my Asus Rog Maximus VI Gene mobo but more i read on the net more i m getting confused regarding if this ssd will work or not.

here is an article suggesting that 80mm (2280) PCIe ssds will work with maximus VI impact and VII Gene. acc to my knowledge both maximus VI impact and VI gene have same mPCIe COMBO II hardware to mount m.2 ssds.
but here asus posted that all Maximus VI boards(except Hero) support this pcie ngff ssd. which is (2280) variant.

now i am confused if i should buy this ssd or not. pls guide me. if anyone has any experience with these 2 together your inputs are more than welcome.

I think you are limited to the 2242 size. The Gene VII has a its own M.2 slot on the board and does not use the mPCIe Combo II card like the Gene VI.

Apacer brand drives have a 2242 form factor but am unsure of specs.

You can still get that Samsung and then get one of these:

I did that for my other machine that doesn't have any M.2 slot. I used a Plextor M6e drive with the adapter.

lol i was thinking about the same thing. i was looking at this Lycom one
on this page they have specifically mentioned XP941

Does your board's BIOS support booting to the XP941? The only 'Gene' board from Asus I saw that has a bios that supports booting to the XP941 is the Maximus VII.

They should. That is what I was going to suggest. Someone should know what their boards support. You may want to try again, might get someone who knows.

They don't. First they didn't understand that I am not talking about regular ssd. Then they started talking about some Asus branded pcie ssd that is installed on pciex8 slot and when I convinced them Samsung has one too they had no idea if I can boot from it or not using my vi gene.

By they I mean 2 guys. My call was forwarded to 'Technical' deptt.

I am about to win an auction and till now I have no idea if this ssd will work out not.

Btw anyone knows if I can use this ssd as my secondary ssd with a small(64gb) boot ssd for OS? Install all my programs and games on this ssd and boot from the sata III ssd? Will the sata ssd bottleneck the performance?

Sorry to hear. That's not funny, but it is. AFAIK acceptance of these really wasn't touted until the Intel 9-series anyway, so you may have to get a newer board (or even wait for the next chipset) to find good support for what you are wanting.

Or get the Plextor M6E which has its own bios to make it bootable. Like i posted earlier, I got one of those with the Addonics M.2 to PCIex4 adapter to put in a machine that doesn't have an M.2 slot. It's actually a socket 775 board and it works fine in that one as an OS drive.

I don't think I have ever heard of that SSD not being recognized by the OS as the problem is almost always making it bootable. People who can get it bootable brag about insanely short boot times.
Programs and games will load into memory much faster, but any file transfers will be limited to the speed at the other end. I'm not sure how much having the OS on a slower SSD will affect things. Also, smaller SSDs are not as fast as their larger brethren, so it will definitely boot slower and might actually feel slower than a single, larger SSD.

The main problem with Samsung XP ssd(according to ppl) is that it can only boot through the uefi or bios. And not many motherboards support that. My board certainly doesn't as per info online.

I cant buy 2 250 bux ssds right now so I think I will drop the idea.:/

Plextor one also looks promising to me. Lets see if I can get a decent deal.

Kingston's also launching pcie ssds & will be shipping them next month. I think they will be cheaper than Samsung and plextor's ssds

Technically they are both the same drive. Once just adds the adapter. I think you are better off getting 2 x 250GB SSDs rather than a single M.2 SSD. When you decide to upgrade your motherboard in the future then pick one with a built in M.2 slot.

The drives are based on the Marvell 88SS9293 controller and unknown type of NAND flash memory. The manufacturer declares speeds up to 1400MB/s read and 1000MB/s write for its product, but does not specify any details regarding IOPS performance. The drive is bootable via standard AHCI drivers, which is very convenient.

This is solid advice. Get a nice-sized SSD for now. I can't remember if you have one, but the Samsungs and newer Crucials have some amazing speeds. The new interface will be great on your next build, plus it would be worth the wait for the market to become more populated and the interface to mature.

Yea, I think @Burner27's advice is solid and really sensible at the moment.

Right now I can afford a 480-512 gb ssd. I will go for Samsung 850 evo or pro or crucial M550.(if they offer this capacity). In case you guys want to suggest something other than these pls let me know. I have limited knowledge about controllers.
