Confusion between compatible machine..Plz Help

Okay Here is My problem .. Actually I want to buy a new computer can't decide either go for laptop or Desktop! But main problem is this .. I need machine for --Watching media on full 1080p or maybe higher res. For smooth playback --3D movies(optional, if good money left then i'll think of spending it over 3D monitor) --Mild gaming(mostly sports FIFA,PES etc not hardcore racing) or might run emulators for 3D wii etc. --Occasional HD video encoding I am thinking of going with Intel 4 th gen with integrated graphics (which might eliminate use of graphic card for now) but can't specify which MB to buy like do I only have to see the processor socket compatibilty only then what about others like GPUsocket ?? -4 core or 2 core processor?? -WHAT IS mini ATX OR mICRO aTx mobo??(Suggest a good mobo with 4th gen ) -how much ram? -laptop or desktop?(like if price range is 1000 dollars) -power supply? Actually I am asking what is the basic requirement for such a machine if then is it possible to get such a machine in form of 1000 dollar laptop ? -Do I have to go for 4th gen Or can get good value for money in 3rd gen processors too for such a machine Plz Someone advice me Highly appreciated

Watching 1080p and 3D media can be easily done on an IGP these days.

Emulators for latest gen games can be quite CPU-hungry. I'd say an i5-4670K is necessary for Dolphin based on anecdotes.

Micro ATX refers to motherboard size and/or case size. There are many form factors around. Wikipedia provides an organized gateway to the info, although of course, you must verify it separately. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATX

For Intel chips, yes, socket compatibility determines whether the chip will work with a motherboard or not. Sometimes a BIOS update is needed for a later gen chip on the same socket, but Haswell is the first gen chip for its socket, so a BIOS update is unecessary.

Modern GPUs are inserted into the PCI Express card slot, usually the biggest one, present on the motherboard.

You purchase a desktop if you need the performance, and/or don't value mobility and/or space that much, and/or need a separate monitor.

You need about 4 to 8 GB of RAM depending on your usage. 8 GB is the sweet spot for most apps these days.

You could get good value for the 3rd gen parts, but the gap is shrinking between 3rd gen and 4th gen parts. The "early buyer" premium for Haswell is slowly eroding away.

Frankly, i5 4670K is heavy on pocket.. Is 4670k worth spening 30 dollars more than 4670 ..I mean at that price range I can fetch a 3Rd Gen I7 process OR aBOVE average 3rd gen i5 processor! But as I said if I go for heavy processor it will eliminate my need for GPU(atleast for sometime) so I can spend money of its part on processor Well. my first PC is my laptop so I kinda ruined for portability but CPU power was a great disadvantage so Do I get a laptop which might be worth ~1000 dollars considering good performer for my needs( except emulation) Please Do suggest me a MOBO too under 120 dollars for 4th gen which can offer upgrades in near future too!

Mainly if you overclock.

We can't offer any useful advice at all, without knowing at least approximate local prices. The above is simply not true in the U.S., Canada, nor most of Europe. In the U.S., an i5-4670 is about $210, an i5-4670K about $235 ($220 promo at Newegg, ATM, though), and an i7-3770 about $290. So, if you can do that, I know some places you aren't, but not where you are.

OR aBOVE average 3rd gen i5 processor!
Well, given that the i5-4670K is the top of the line 4th-gen i5, it would make sense that you could get a better than overage older CPU for the same or less money.

Do suggest me a MOBO too under 120 dollars for 4th gen which can offer upgrades in near future too!
If not overclocking, nor using multiple GPUs, nor needing HBAs, there will not be any motherboard over $120 worth consideration, so that seems like a non-problem. How about an ASRock B85 Pro4?

First I apologise for my wrong fact that I get i7 processor at that range..there is no such processor here which is less than 4670K! But yeah, I am not into overclocking The only reason I want a Desktop is to watch 1080 3D movies without a single glith on playback,Good gameplay of games like FIFA/PES (not hardcore gamer), No lags when using heavy programs like my present laptop is 1.8 GHz so Web browsing kind of only thing which I can do at a time (no proper multitasking) Occasional conversion of a 700 MB movie take 1.5-2 hrs so yeah I don't want that! Also want to try Wii3D emulation(optional) Budget I chose is 1000 Dollars but I'll build my machine in parts like I'll first built CPU as I already have a reserve PC whose general hardware I can use for now like keyb, mouse, monitor not sure If I have to buy a new case and cooling system! Then next month to that I'll go for a good quality monitor (if money left then might go for 3D) Difference b/w 4670K & 4670 here is 21.05 dollars (considering 1 Dollar = 60 INR) And yeah I don't want Any extra GPU spot or HBA but a HDMI port would be a good feature to have! Umm.. Do you think the processor I am buying is too much for my requirement or lesser ..plz Do comment about this? And that Mobo you said is not available here so what about ASrock Z87 extreme 3/4 both are available and affordable here of AsRock..but I still have to look for other options too I mean I have to look for 8 in like Z(8)7 in mobo name Also I am in no hurry to buy a GPU if integrated graphics 4600 worked well then with my requirements then I'll wait for some time to buy a Good GPU(so as a result PSU i'll buy will be 500W) I think I have given you my general insight for machine Any recommendations

Not to browbeat you, man. But please, please use paragraphs. Those large blocks of text are very hard for most people to read, which is going to make it harder for you to get helpful responses.🙂

Z87 boards are for overclocking. Outside of that, they give practically nothing over an H87 board. H87 gives you a few neat features, but mostly Intel RAID and SSD caching capability. B85 doesn't offer those or overclocking, and is the cheapest for the latest CPUs.

A Gigabyte or Asus B85 or H87 board would do just fine, too, and tend to be anywhere from $70 to $110. Get one with 4 RAM slots, and you'll have room to grow some, over time.

What resolution is your current monitor?

Intel RAID is if I want to use multiple hard disks but I don't want that and no overclocking so this mean I should look for only H87 mobo................... But do they come with a HDMI port?

hwnewbie,

You mentioned maybe you want a laptop. Do you see yourself moving your pc around the house or to friend's place or Langaming parties? There are desktop cases that allow for this. If not then its no big deal but it will help people help you better on case choice if you tell us.

Also, welcome to the forums.

Um.. I'll take that suggestion but I was thinking if I got any spare money left I'll cut down and save more money to buy a mid level Tablet to satisfy portable needs but for performance needs still I want this machine to be primary.......If those cases seem OK for budget then I'll look into that

Does this different Chipset versions mean different level of performances or only differ as u explained earlier?

They only differ in terms of features, performance is identical.

is there a difference in H87 & H87 express chipset

H87 Express is technically the full name of the chipset because Intel learned that you can't trademark a model number back in the 90's. Everybody just calls it H87 though.

As I was making list there are few things I get stuck .............. 1.Which MObo brand is best? Most say Asus but intel itself make Haswell boards so is there anything like better compatibilty of processor with mobo ..................... 2 I want RAM of 8 GB.so should I go 8x1 or 4x2 combination? .................... 3 With my required demands, Is 500 W PSU is sufficient even If I go with any mid range graphic card (those PSU calc. make me confuse one said 378 without GPU) ?

Also, welcome to the forums.
Thanx!Whn I googled best tech forums it came first so I came here with my doubts and so far my experience is best! People are experienced ,user-friendly interface, Quick replies ! So far loved It

1.Which MObo brand is best?
Asus, Gigabyte, ASRock, and MSI are hard to go wrong with, generally.

I want RAM of 8 GB.so should I go 8x1 or 4x2 combination?
2x4GB.

3 With my required demands, Is 500 W PSU is sufficient even If I go with any mid range graphic card
Yes, but make it a good one. The Seasonic Eco seires offers good bang/buck, based on previous threads with buyers in India, if it's readily available to you.

Most of the calculators expect a not-so-good supply, so overrate. Even so, the stated wattage is a peak draw metric. You'll get the most life (IE, least risk of the PSU dying before other parts) by using a PC that won't use more than maybe 75% or so of the rated wattage of even a good PSU.
