Confusion about the KT400

So as far as I understand it the KT400 does not offer official support for DDR400. However it does offer many other benefits which make it appealing. I'm still confused about one thing. Supposedly, when you run the FSB and the RAM at the same speed then they never wait for each other but when you are running them at different speeds there is a bit of a performance loss. Hopefully this is made up for by the added memory bandwith. But what if one is to overclock the frontside bus to match the speed of the ram? If I was to overclock the FSB to 166 and keep the RAM at 166 (effectively 333) then is there no pefromance hit? Or is that performance hit going to occur anyways on these typicaly asychronous motherboards? This is what keeps me up at night.

i run mine 166mhz fsb and 166mhz memory

yup it gives it a nice performance boost over a stock 133/166mhz fsb/memory

running the ram synchronous like that wont give you any kind of performance penalty

Boonesmi answered part of your question very nicely, so there's nothing to say there...

As per your DDR400 question, there isn't a single company in the world that can claim official support for DDR400 memory because DDR400 is not an official sanctioned specification. Only the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) can officially say "Hey, only such and such defines what it means to be a DDR400 device, so manufacture your chips in this way and you have real DDR400."

However, any company can claim their product unofficially supports DDR400. Chipset designers SiS and VIA are examples of some of the companies that are claiming unofficial support for DDR400 (look at the SiS 648 chipset or the VIA P4X400 chipset).
