confused with the defination about 'due date'

I'm confused with the defination about 'due date'
for instance: due date for assignment is Jan.15
Is the last date for hand in Jan.14 or Jan.15

key word there was BY Jan. 15th meaning before
due on the 15th would be what you were thinking.
