I am newbie, and I need/want a computer to game and do homework on, because my powerbook isn't cutting it anymore, and I need a PC for some applications, that I cannot run on my mac. I have been doing research off and on for the last couple of weeks, and the more I read the more confused I get by all the different specs. So I need some help.

I have a couple of questions, and any combo recomendations, (mobo, cpu, ram) would be greatly appreciated. My budget is around $1,000 USD. Thats just the hardware, excluding the monitor, input devices and windows xp. I don't plan to overclock, but do not want to be screwed if down the road I decide too.

Uses: Mainly for 3D modeling, (not too heavy stuff, mainly rhino), gaming, page layouts, and photo editing.

The people I have talked to said I should go with PCI-express, because it is replacing AGP. Also I should go with Abit or Asus. Also I would like to go with AMD instead of Intel. How can you tell if one part works with another? Matched components? I have been looking at the manufactor websites, and still am pretty confused.

Again any help with choosing the right components would be greatly appreicated.

If you *really* don't know what you're doing, ask one of your techie friends for help. I'm sure they'll help you out. You could always buy a pre-built system.

I'd personally suggest something along the lines of:

S939 3000+
DFI Ultra-D
1GB of Corsair VS or G.Skill
Whatever DVD-RW
Antec Sonata w/ 380W PSU
80-200GB HD SATA
Windows XP Home (Unless you have something else)
Zalman 7000AlCu or Cu / Thermalright XP-90 / XP-90C w/ Panaflo
6600 / 6600GT ? Cheapest brand.

Kensai's specs seem decent although I'm not sure how close to 1k that'll run.

(especially considering you'll likely need kb/mouse/monitor, considering your MAC laptop status).

It looks like he's switching from a laptop so, like no KB/mouse. Personally, I put more stock in the user interface than system specs, for a value / dollar consideration. That said, if he wants a 17" LCD and a decent kb/mouse, his budget is noticably tighter. Assuming he does have said items, I agree w/ your specs 100%
