how important is what you get your degree in compared to the type of career you want to work in after college? AND how important is the name of the university you went to in the working world? i don't mean 10 years after you graduate - but right after graduation when you're looking for a job.

i'm asking because i just transferred from a reputable university to a state college because my first school did not offer what i wanted to study. i don't have tons of money to spend for college, so my choices were limited to public universities in state (which is CA).

im not in college yet but a degree from harvard will certainly get you farther than a degree from New York State Community College.

Honestly, unless your really shooting to be something political or high-profile like that, a degree from a "lesser" school really does the job while saving your money. And yeah, do what you want to do, I think that's just a bit more important than having to go to Harvard and studying something you hate:)

thanks Bobtist

i think it's important to study something you are interested in - after all, you're spending 4 (most likely 5 nowadays) years of your life in college.

but i guess i'm still trying to adjust to my new place after transfering because i gave up alot when i left my first school. and it's really hard trying to explain to people why i transfered. i'm tired of hearing, "you left there, to go here." it's like i'm downgrading, and usually when you transfer, you go to a better school.

man, i am sooo lost.

There are plenty of good UC schools! UCSD and UCLA are two of the good ones. :)

HA! I was using Harvard as an example saying Busniness degree at Hardvard means more than that same degree at a lesser school.

But doing what you want is the most important .. duh!

I'm sure you'll learn your way around soon enough.

Yeah, usually when you change schools you "upgrade." My friend Katie came here to UF from Florida State, perfect example;).

Unless your heading into a political or otherwise high-profile field, a degree from a "lesser" school is every bit as good as that from a high profile college and costs much less too. And it's ALWAYS better to study something you like and enjoy than studying something you hate at another school just because it's more "reputable".

Usually you get what you pay for: any money you spend for education is an investment. I have some friends here that had to bust their back to pay for a better education and got to much better places later on because of that. So if you really want to succeed don't be scared by some hard work and a small debt: it WILL pay off later on!
