Hi!

If I want to use an LCD Monitor (not TV, costs too much for high res & size) with 1920x1200 and an HDMI port, still get audio, and be able to play my PS2, Sega Genesis (RCA / Coax), etc. .. ... is it possible? What do I use?

(Also, my sound is 7.1. four 3.5mm jacks.)

A reciever will allow me to split the video and the audio, and let me play my genesis (coax) on HDMI?

What happens, as far as resolution.. when I watch normal TV? or 1080 movies on a 1200 monitor?

Sorry for my stupidity. Help appreciated.

A receiver will generally allow you to do what you want to do with the exception of the Sega Genesis. To the best of my knowledge I don't think there are any receivers that accept input via F-Connectors and then send the video out via HDMI. You'd need to convert the coaxial into a set of composite outputs. Doesn't the Genesis have a standard output of a composite video out along with analog audio? Insofar as the TV goes you're going to need some kind of tuner to receive the TV signal to display it on the monitor. If this is going to be near a PC there's a wide variety of tuner cards available depending on what you want it to do.

Do not want to use my PC as a tuner. That makes it impossible to play a game while watching TV.....

I have a box from cable company. I think that is all I need? It says "HD Dual Tuner" and "HDMI."

...

Can you suggest a reciever? 7.1 :D

If you have a box from the cable company that'll work just fine. Insofar as a receiver that I would suggest I would need to know what your budget is first. I know you're requirements but there are a lot of receivers that meet them.

I would preffer under $250, lower is better of course... but I'll spend more if it means not getting a piece of crap.

..

my main concern is, how will a 1920x1200 "monitor," resolve using 1080 for blu-ray, and lower for cable, etc.? bars? stretch?

I would recommend an Onkyo 605 receiver if you're trying to keep it low cost - it should run $250-$300 by now.

You can _definitely_ get it lower than that online. I could get a 606 for less than that, I think.

606 is right around $400 at amazon but was less a week ago. 605 is at $349, probably better to wait for the 606 to come down a bit and spend the $30 or so extra for the 606.
