Was looking at some stereo components today for my system. Just recently got a the Panny 700U and am going HD-DVD. I keep on seeing "1080p" or "upconverts to 1080" listed on receivers, etc. What is it and how necessary is it?

Thanks

(1) Unless you already purchased an HD-DVD player & can't return it I would reconsider & go with Bluray instead based on Warner's announcement that it's going 100% BD ... while the war isn't completely over I think the writing is on the wall & HD is going down. :(

(2) "Upconverts to" on a receiver means that the receiver has a built-in video processer that will upscale lower resolution video feeds to 1080i/1080p etc ... unless you go with somthing very high-end your Panasonic LCD almost certainly has a higher quality scaler & you won't need it.

1) Yeah...I heard the news...still debating on it. Sigh.

2) If I have both will the Panny's upscaler get "priority" over the receiver?

Thanks for the info.

It depends on how you configure your setup ... I'd need to know more about the receiver you end up going with & its specs before I could answer with any certainty.

As an example if you have a 1080i HD-DVD player & a 1080p TV, if you connect the player directly to the TV it will be upscaled by the processer in the TV, however if you use HDMI to go from the HD-DVD to the receiver first then to the TV AND set the receiver to 1080p it should take over the scaling, BUT if you set the receiver to 1080i to match the HD-DVD's output it would still be done by the TV ... make sense?

Yes! Thanks for the info. I'm looking at some Onkyos. Preferably an Onkyo "set." The SR800 is nice but a little expensive for me.
