confused by the maximum luggage I'm allowed to carry

For travel with an origin and destination outside the U.S./Canada (i.e. within Asia or within Europe), the weight concept applies. The weight concept allows a maximum weight for baggage, per person, that can be checked free of charge. The free weight applies to the total weight of all bags checked by an individual.

For travel wholly within or between Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the maximum checked luggage weight limitation is:

o Coach Class: 44 pounds (20 kg)
o World Business Class: 66 pounds (30 kg)
o Infants not occupying a passenger seat: 22 pounds (10 kg)

Does this mean I'm only allowed to carry 44 pounds total? or 44 pounds per bag?

44lbs... holy sh1t.. free luggage seems a lot less than normal. I brought a 135lb bag with me once - had a lot of books/trinkets I bought in Madrid. I forget what airline I used, though.

hmmm looks like i'm paste the wrong info, that was for travel "between" cities outside us. for trave from us to japan i think i use this

International Travel - between North America and Africa / Asia / Europe / India / Middle East)
o
Coach Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed two (2) pieces of checked luggage.
+
Both pieces: 50 pounds (23 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm).
* Exceptions for travel wholly between U.S./Canada and the Philippines, checked pieces may weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each.

o World Business Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed three (3) pieces of checked luggage.
1. First two (2) pieces: 70 pounds (32 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm).
2. Third piece: 40 pounds (18 kg) with with linear dimensions not to exceed 45 inches (115 cm).

50lbs, does this mean per piece or total?

geez, that's low, each empty luggage already weight about 15-20 lbs, It's going to be hard carrying two luggage filled with gifts.

What airline is this? Cathy Pacific allows two 70lbs(total 140lbs) , a carry on, plus a laptop/camera bag. This was May '05. edit: and it was coach.

I think you are allowed two 50lbs for Coach and two 70lbs for Business. But, it's best to call them up and confirm. BTW, if you are travelling during the holiday season all the airlines are very strict about following the rules. It's not like that during other times of the year.

Its very likely you can bring more, but you may get charged extra for it if you bring more then a few extra pounds ... make those gifts small & lightweight!

I met a girl who had an extra luggage to check, and it was overwieght. They ended up charging her $400 which was more than she had paid for her ticket (Japan->US one way on United) but she did get upgraded to business class.

Reading comprehension much?

i thought the standard was pretty much 50 lbs each piece for the major airlines. Every time my wife's mom travels back home, we have to weigh each box to make sure it is not over 50...IIRC, she flies Northwest alot (better fares???)...
