confused by some religious references in The Vampire Armand.. help?

I just finished reading The Vampire Armand.. I ran across some religious references and was wondering if you guys could help. What does Veronica's Veil refer to in the bible? How does this whole bread/water thing work?? What's the significance of the egg and where the bird flew free?

Are these things actually stories in the bible? All I know about the bread/water thing is that it is supposed to be the blood of Jesus or something? BTW, I am not religious at all.. I am agnostic so curious as to what Anne Rice is pointing to or trying to explain...
