So I have a relatively new build, Conroe E6600 @ 3.5 GHz, 2 GB RAM @ DDR2-973, and Win XP Pro SP2 w/ all patches installed. The system seems to like to reboot itself when idle, though, and I haven't really been able to figure out why. It shouldn't be the overclock, as I left it running prime95 overnight and it was fine, so I can't imagine that it would be crashing while at idle if it can hold up under that kind of stress (and further, when the system crashes due to overclocking related faults, it's configured to not reboot until I manually reset it...so it's like it's telling itself to reboot). One strange thing I've noticed, the reboots seem to happen at somewhat odd times...the one that happened last night happened at exactly 5:00 am (I can measure these things because the PC acts as a bridge to the rest of my network, so when it goes down other computers register a connection loss...which is mostly why I'd prefer to not have it rebooting randomly), and then today one happened at 7:03 pm, which is close enough to 7:00 pm to make it seem a bit suspicious, in light of the other time. I'm paying closer attention to it now so we'll see if the next reboot happens around a 'round' time as well.
But anyways, my question was, has anybody seen something like this before, where a system would just decide to reboot itself after sitting idle for awhile? I get no issues under load, whether gaming or stress-testing or surfing the Internet...it only seems to reboot during periods of extended idle activity. I turned off Automatic Updates this morning, but that didn't seem to prevent the 7:00 pm reboot. I also noticed in the event log that the remote control software that I use seemed to have crashed (but at 3:00 pm, not 7:00 pm), so now I have that disabled as well, though I use the same software on several other PC's, and have never had any problems with it, so I doubt it's the culprit. The system has no events logged around the time of the reboots...though isn't there a TweakUI option or some such thing to enable logging of reboot events?
Edit: well, nevermind the bit about it only happening when idle...right after I posted that, the system just restarted (and it was a sudden kind of restart, there was no 'the system is shutting down...' kind of message). Still somewhat odd about the time...almost exactly 9:30 pm. I'm going to drop my BIOS to the non-beta 609 revision, and see what that does.
