okay, so I've finally decided on getting the following setup, not sure if I need to get Vista home premium 64bit or 32bit. Mind you I will be gaming the latest games i.e UT3, Quake Wars ET, Crysis, WOW, HalfLIfe expansions, COD 4, all the latest crap....since i also have 4 gigs of ram, should i just close my eyes and opt for 64bit vista? The awful dealer I went to already kept bragging about how all his customers bought 64bit home and returned them since they were'nt compatible with a lot of software, at that point i got annoyed and decided to hold on purchasing any windows. Help would be appreciated.

MY setup:

Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 EPP Dual Channel Memory Kit - $149 - $119 after rebate

EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800GTS Crysis Edition 670MHZ 512MB 1.94GHZ DDR3 PCI-E DVI-I HDTV Out Video *IR-$20* -$339 - $319 after rebate

Scythe Infinity 5 Heatpipe CPU Cooler LGA775 S478 AM2 S754 S939 S940 120MM 1200RPM 23.5DBA 46.5CFM - $49.99 OR OCZ Vandetta heatsink with fan 39.99

E8400 core 2 duo - $219

ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP ATX LGA775 P35 DDR2 1333FSB 2PCI-E16 3PCI 2PCI-E1 SATA2 Sound WLAN Motherboard $167.90

Coolermaster Elite RC-330 ATX Blk Case 4X5.25 2X3.5 5X3.5INT No PS 1X120MM Rear Fan Front I/O Panel

Coolermaster Extreme Power 650W ATX 12V V2.01 Silent Power Supply 20/24PIN 120MM Fan

Cool, I've subscribed to your thread. Thanks and good luck!

There's no question that you need to go for 64bit. Microsoft will be dropping support for 32bit like a rock.

64bit is the future. Your rig is ALOT like my latest one. I'm running Vista 64bit and Crysis is running like it would on a console. Buttery smooth.

Mostly I have been playing CoD4, which plays PERFECTLY at the highest resolution.

I'd go with Vista64. I used Vista32 from Jan-Sep last year, and Vista64 from Sep-present, and I noticed no difference either way. With Vista64 you'll get to use all of your ram, and you'll be more future proof.

from what i am currently experiencing, installing both versions on identical HDs - IF your HW is new and 64-bit - there is no reason to not go 64-bit

despite my double negative, Vista 64 is a good way to go

as to the 'benchmarking' .... expect some results ....

soon ;)

Last I heard Windows 7 was going to have both a 32 and 64 version.

I hear support is pretty good now (heck even Omega Drivers are supported now) but I'm not sure about performance, personally I'd play it safe and dual boot Vista 64-bit and XP Pro 32-bit.

I was dual booting Vista 32 and 64bit for awhile there, and I can't tell any major difference in performance. I can only recall one program compatibility issue (CoreTemp), but a simple Google search solved that problem. Nice thing about 64bit is that can make use of all 4GBs for RAM.

If your hardware supports it, go for it.

Yeah I'm with that notion too but you never know when you might need Windows XP 32-bit, it doesn't hurt, it's only 4GB more on your HDD.

True, I just found out that Active-TV for the D-Link DSM 520 will not install on Vista 64bit! :) Therefore, I'm using a virtual machine running XP 32bit to run Active-TV when needed.
