I have asked this question to the nerds in corporate IT and got conflicting answers. I would like to get the readers opinion here. I have a Dual Core 3.16 CPU, 9800 GX2 and a Dell 24 Inch Wide Screen with a max resolution of 1920 X 1200. As far as playing games, will I gain anything by upgrading my video card? Thanks.

You will, but 9800 GX2 is pretty good already in terms of that resolution. I think any viable upgrade would be 4850/4870 X2s or GTX 295. Otherwise, I believe single GPU is actually slower than the 9800 GX2.

go for a 4870x2
they r selling at almost the same price here in india
(arnd 33k rps)

295 i heard is a 260 sli(i heard , this is not my field, i dont even have to know)
so a 4870 outperforms a 260
so go for its sli
and i have a feeling in my heart that 4850 x2 will outperform 295:p
and what dual core processor r u using e8500 ??

Yes, an E8500. The 9800 GX2 handles 1920X1200 just fine. So what would I gain by a more powerful card upgrade?

Unless you just can't bear the framerates you're getting right now in your games, there is no reason at all to upgrade. Current offerings don't give you much more for the price you'll be paying, the 9800GX2 should be able to handle just about any game you play, albeit not at max everything.

there is no worthwhile logical single upgrade for the gx2 right now. it's still a very fast card. to upgrade would be throwing lots of money at something not necessarily that much better.

and we all know that 9800gx2 wasn't the cheapest card ever. keep it a bit longer and harvest more value out of it.

Read this article before you go any further.

At 1920x1200 the GX2 is still a decent card but there's better available (significantly in some cases - just look at Crysis Warhead).

Looks like the only thing even moderately worthwhile would be at least a 4870x2 but better would be a GTX295.

I would hold off upgrading that video card until your E8500 starts feeling long in the tooth and you decide to upgrade the entire thing.
