Confused... also just slightly angering.

This has me confused.

Based on forum rules, resellers are not allowed to sell here. So what I see are indivuals trying to make the same ammount of money because Paypal charges fees that they pass on since they are a merchant.

Basically Anands has two rules contradicting each other. While I have never charged more for paypal because I find it scares people away, other people are already losing a lot of money. Why do they have to lose more if they are not a reseller but a private person?

Also Anands definition of a reseller is a person who buys in quanity to resell here. Basically to make profit since they get a price break on volume discounts.
What about this? I see a lot of people selling 'NIB'... with the bar code (UPC) carefully cut out for rebate purposes. In turn, they sell it for less than retail and still make a profit. Shouldn't they be considered a dealer being they make a profit? They can also go out and buy more of the same product with MIR's so long as it has not expired.

A perfect example I seen was not too long ago. Two identical products of WinXP. One person found out his computer can not handle it. He puts it up for sale then someone offers the same thing for much less with the UPC cut out. Who's do you think sold?

What I am getting at is. I think this place should be either for the individuals without the contradictions, or allow 'dealers' back in since in essense a UPC cutter can be called a dealer by making profit.
Resellers do after all save money offering new products most of the time while being able to make a living and make most people happy. But UPC cutters make a profit and can potentially make unlimited profit buying one at a time while not being considered a dealer.

While I appreciate Anandtech trying to make this place a good place to visit, the FS/FT has a couple contradicting rules that should be resolved.

I don't see the contradiction. If you don't want to deal with PayPal charges, don't use the service, and stick to MOs. If you want to pass the charge on to the buyer, add a couple of bucks to the price :)

The UPC Bandits are a whole different story, and I think the mods have tried to address this situation before. I have seen threads locked where all that was being sold was stuff that was bought from Hot Deals, and then resold in FS/FT. I am of two minds about that... I live in Vermont and don't have some of the opportunities that others have to participate in some of the big chain sales, so I appreciate getting *some* price break on some items, however, purchasing with the intent to resell *is* the definition of a dealer. If dealers are allowed here, you won't be able to sell anything because someone will have 20 of what you have and will be selling it cheaper.

What I would like clarification on is the peddling of Not For Resale software.... :)

Regarding the paypal thing. You're getting a service that's handling money for you and you should reasonably expect to pay a bit for that convenience. However, by setting your prices in FS/FT $1-2 higher across the board, you'll effectively eliminate (or at least rationalize away) the small % Paypal takes out. There's nothing wrong with asking more for something, but it can't have anything to do with a difference between, for instance, Paypal and MO. If, once you make a deal, you choose to give a guy a couple buck break via email/pm, that's your choice as a seller.

As for the UPC Bandits, I consider that more an issue of community or atmosphere and I'm all for keeping rampant UPC banditory activity to a minimum.
