I was laid off last month, and received severance / final pay as such:

- final pay
- job hunt assistance ($ lump sum)
- Time off & profit sharing

I received all of this earlier in the month, I see this morning they deposited the job assistance $ again as well as a random amount of money. The pay-stub does not define what is what.

I guess I should tell them - if it was intentional I guess it won't hurt - I'm assuming that this is the kind of thing that will bite you in the ass later.

Advice?

It's all about personal ethics...either you have them...or you don't.

I worked with a guy who encountered a similar issue once:

He had worked for a large company and had a boss who was never around. This guy pretty much did his thing, and is a hard worker, so everyone let him be. Eventually he quit and moved out of the country to explore for a year. He came back and found out that his previous company never officially terminated him, and kept sending out paychecks. He arrived to just under one full year of paychecks for a job he wasn't even working at.

He ended up taking all the cash.

They're a company I want to stay in good graces with, it's brutal though because it's a LOT of money (3k+) and I'm trying to rationalize where it came from. The whole thing doesn't exactly add up.

I will call them.

I guess there is no recourse that company could take, minus black listing the hell out of you?

Maybe I don't understand the situation correctly, but why couldn't the company attempt to reclaim the funds?

I guess that is true - I'm not sure what a company can and can't do in a situation like this.

What's that company again?

Call them and let them know. It'll make you look like the good guy (and hey, maybe it's not a mistake!). If you don't call and they discover the mistake they'll make an attempt to reclaim the funds that will probably be successful, so then you've gained nothing and will have burned some bridges in the meantime.

We got a random check for $1600 the other day from our old mortgage company. The wife called and they said it was extra money from our refi that they owed us. Pretty nice.
