confused about pc upgrade

I have an old rig with ti4200, Im not sure if it is a good time to upgrade, I will get an a64 3200+ with a 6800 if I upgrade now. However, s754 will become the socket for crappy sempron and it only got single channel ddr, it sounds stupid to buy a s754 cpu now. I intended to wait for nforce4 and pcie version of 6800 but I dunno if they will be out in october, tell me what I should do now.

Socket 939 prices are at a premium, with not more than a 5-10% performance gain. If you have money to burn, they will offer a longer upgrade path for the future. I would go for value instead. The athlon 64 3000 is only $170 or so retail boxed, and some people are getting 2500 out of them overclocked. If I were going to spend hundreds for the cpu alone, I would wait a little longer for the .09 micron amd cpus. Can't tell you when they're coming out.
