Confused about memory timings on Intel system

Hi all,

Just build a web surfing, email system for one of my nieces.

P4 2.53 (Bought on these forums)
P4S800 (Had hanging around)
ti 4200 (Had 5 of them)
2x256 Twinmos pc2700

I ran Everest and the memory latency benchmark was 2.5-3-3-7 but was very crappy.

Was playing a little with it and upped the FSB to 150. No problems running at 2.85ghz.
Temps were 30 idle. BUT, I forgot I was overclocking the memory also by default and the memory read 3-4-4-8 pc3000.

OOPS I had a pair of CH-5 pc3200's that had been great for me and installed that memory instead. IT IS STILL RUNNING AT 3-4-4-8 timings at pc3000 speed with crappy bandwidth.

I cleared cmos. Ram Guy once told me clearing this clears the memory controller so when comp reboots it will read the correct speed.

No dice. Everest still shows pc3000 3-4-4-8 timings with the pair of PC3200 CH-5's and still lousy bandwidth.

P4s800 is a VERY basic board and there is nothing in bios to set timings manually

Just curious as to why this is happening.

Thanks in advance, Leigh

because thats what SPD (the actually chip in your memory that tells the comp what timings to use) is telling your computer to run automatically. My corsair XMS CH-5 was only rated for 2.5-3-3-7 @ PC3200, so yours is not that slow at all.
