I have seen some convincing arguments on this forum for switching to a 64 bit OS (arguments that include enhanced security). So, I just uninstalled Win 7 RC 32 bit, and installed Win 7 RC 64 bit.
I double boot Win 7 with Win XP 32 bit. In XP I have been using MechBgon's multilayered defense for a while. MechBgon's suggestions, combined with my "low risk" usage (and paranoia) means that I haven't had a virus infection in many, many years. All this is to say that while I use an antivirus, it isn't my primary line of defense by any means.
Now that I started using a 64 bit OS, I am wondering whether I should switch antivirus software. I have read a lot of inconsistent info on the need for native 64 bit AV software. My current AV, Antivir, "works well in a 64 bit OS" but, as I understand it, does not run natively in 64 bits. On the other hand Avast claims to run natively in 64 bits.
I know both are highly recommended here. I like Antivir, and have been using for a long time. My question is: are there any disadvantages of using a 32 bit AV in a 64 bit OS? Am I leaving any "holes" open by doing this? Conversely, are there any compelling reasons to use a 64 bit native AV in a 64 bit os?
Given my low risk behavior and the fact that the AV is not my primary line of defense, with all else being equal my main concern is using an AV that will have the lowest impact on performance -- low resource usage, etc -- without leaving any major security holes open.
Any input on this will be appreciated!
