Confused about 802.1x authentication (wireless)

I'm using 128-bit WEP for my wireless connection, and am using XP's Zero Wireless Config.

1. There is a checkbox for "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" that is checked by default, but unchecks itself if a WEP key is typed in (it can still be rechecked). What is this authentication for? And should I be using it?

2. Open System vs. Shared Key - Which one?

Am using a Netgear MR814 router and a D-Link PC Card.

Both Zero configuration and Authentication has nothing to do with Entry Level 802.11b.

Disable them to avoid problems. The manufactures drivers and utilities are the actual control of the hardware.
