My monitor is a viewsonic E75. It is set on resolution1024x768 32bit. The refresh rate is currently at 75Hz. According to the viewsonic site and manual it can go up to 86Hz. So I right click on the desktop go to properties -> settings -> advanced -> monitor to change the Hz to 85Hz. There is a checkbox there "Hide modes that this monitor can not display". With that box checked it goes only up to 75Hz. So why is it that it goes only up to 75Hz and not 85Hz? Most importantly, will everything be okay if I unchecked it and set it to 85Hz? I don't want to damage or mess up anything.

I'm using w2k and vid card is creative geforce2 ultra.

Link for the viewsonic specs.

Yes, my friend, it is absolutely safe to uncheck it and select the refresh rate you want.

And since you probably want more than yes or no...

You can even try 100 Hz on your monitor. If it doesn't support it, it won't just try to set itself to 100 Hz and explode :) It will go out of sync, and its light will flicker or it will display a message like "Out of Range". It is absolutely safe, you can simply press <Esc> in Windows because as soon as you clicked "Apply" or "Ok", Windows Display Properties showed a message like "Do you want to keep the current settings, Yes/No?". Pressing <Esc> clicks "No", and the monitor goes back to the original refresh rate.

Windows hides that refresh rate probably because the .Inf file, which tells Windows what resolutions at what refresh rates your monitor supports, is outdated. You can download the latest .Inf file from the manufacturer.

Good luck, let me know if it works out!

I assume you are using the default WinXP drivers for your monitor..? If so, go to the link you provided and download VS_WINXP.EXE.. That might fix the issue..

Thanks for the replies :)

I will download the lastest inf file from viewsonic and install it. However right now i'm in the middle of something and can't do that at the moment(requires a restart I believe). Hopefully it will display that 85Hz is supported; if not then well, i'll just uncheck it and see how it goes :D

mine is "supposed" to run at 75Hz at 1600x1200 but it works fine at 85Hz. windows default drivers don't get it. and sometimes even the right driver doesn't get it.

Okay I downloaded the file on viewsonic and it didn't help. So I just made it 85Hz. When I changed it to 85Hz everything seemed fine. However there is a difference which I did notice. The text didn't seem to be as sharp and not as dark as before, is this normal?
