Skoorb and I have been looking for an active game of this for some time now. For those that don't know of it, it is an older BBS game where you manage an empire, and attack other empires, OR you can have a group attack against another BBS.

It was the BEST game... any help would be appreciated. :)

***UPDATE:***

To play:

- telnet to: telnet://fame.darktech.org
- register as a new user
- go to the online games section
- select Barren Realms Elite (BRE)
- select a name for your empire and start going

Things nice to know: (courtesy of Skoorb)

1) Get regions early on. You have a bunch of protection turns so just build up the infrastructure!
2) press ? at menus you don't understand. I found that on one of the list topic ones I was getting locked into a loop. Press backspace and then ? again and enter and eventually you'll be back on track. Once you learn what's going on you will end up blasting through turns quickly.
3) it seems that randomly sometimes menus list the choices and other times they don't; they are always there however.

Here is a site with a TON of information on the game and how to play, etc. Link

Yeah, I remember. Skoorb, me, and a few others were looking for a new html/telnet versions on these old BBS games to get an ATOT group game going.

I don't think there is an HTML version. I believe you still have to set up some BBS software and put a telnet front-end on it. Then you would have to setup the BRE game as a door in the BBS.

I think we'd be better off finding an active game. :D

Yeah I don't think there is an HtmL version. If I had a list of all the rules and some screenshots and what not I don't imagine it would be a massive undertaking to create it in ASP though it would take me a number of weeks to do it I think that it could generate some interest.

OMFG I'm going to be sick! n8magic shot me over to this link.

"telnet datashack.dyndns.org" in your start menu and you're off and running!! there are only 10 nodes at a time, but this has BRE in it. You can log on as a guest. It is a free BBS so I imagine we can all setup usernames. There are no BRE games really playing now. I made one called SkoorbatATtesting but that wouldn't be my real setup. So are we gonna play or what? BRE is one of the best games ever. Just play a few turns and you'll be addicted. Unlike some other terribly complex turn based internet games this doesn't require 6 hours of learning. You get 10 turns a day (assuming it is setup like that), so it doesn't require logging in every 5 hours either.

ok also telnet://fame.darktech.org seems to have league games going - there was a message that somebody wrote as late as two days ago, so people are playing BRE on that board. it has 4 nodes (4 people at once). Which will we play? The second one seemed to be running SIGNIFICANTLY faster.

Second one! Second one!

League play is one of the best parts of that game. I'll set up my empire when I get home from work.

My Skoorbville is getting big fast :D

This looks interesting. I played a C64 variation of this game a long time ago. Can one of you guys do a quick rundown of strategy and the rules of the game?

I'm looking for a strategy guide now... it's been so long that I may give you misinformation if I go by memory. :D

Wow, that old dial-up stuff?

If thats still up, I wonder if anyone ported Trade Wars 2002. I had some nice scripts that made me a bunch of money. then blowing up others ships and invading their planets.

Oddly enough, that was pretty fun.

Well, I've got all night so I'll figure it out. But it seems I can only log onto local play and not league. Why is this?

Edit: Ah, it looks like the max # of players is 14

I don't remember if I've played this game or not. Are lands won by the roll of a die and a number representing how many men you have? The team with men at the end wins?

Basically you play locally on that BBS and since it is linked to the other ones that is the league aspect. So ideally your local league is fairly good friends and they set up alliances and then attack remote BBSs. I can't think of much strategy either now, so in the meantime just buy regions constantly each turn!

So did anyone else get this to work then? I've logged in a few times without much issue.

start menu > run > telnet fame.darktech.org <enter>

Dam the league game filled up? This won't work then....BRE needs to be badly rewritten in ASP on a real internet server for fark's sake!

That BBS in the main post has LORD. :D

Skoorb:
You might as well join in on the local BRE game too.

My empire's name is Nef-topolis. I'm dead I think. :D The league game only has 14 slots, and all slots were filled.
