The story
Do not call Billy Bob Thornton an actor when you are interviewing him about his music.

A Canadian radio host learned that lesson when Thornton and his electric hillbilly band -- the Boxmasters -- visited his Toronto, Ontario, studio Wednesday morning.

When Jian Ghomeshi introduced the trio on his CBC show, he noted that its singer-songwriter-drummer

He got a little defensive, but I was expecting something much douchey-er based on the thread title.

He got very sensitive and wanted to compare himself to Tom Petty...

At first he seems drugged out. He doesn't sound like he's connected to the conversation at all.

Then he turns total douche - but still seems a little weird.

If Billy Bob specifically asked him not to mention his acting, then it's the DJ that was the douchebag.

I thought the dj handled it great. All the he did was into him with reference to his acting, which would have been stupid not to, and thornton went autistic. Either case, what an @ssbite.

Did you listen to the interview?

I was in the middle of listening to it, but it kept buffering. I finally go to the part you're obviously referencing. Sounds like either the DJ is a douche, or the producer didn't clearly explain Billy Bob's wishes to the DJ. Obviously Billy Bob doesn't want his acting career to influence the way people judge his music, and somehow the DJ didn't get.

Even if you are correct, and that's a big if, the way he handled it shows he's an asshole. He should've been more professional.

EDIT: The DJ meant no harm. He was just trying to tell his listeners who this guy was (in his past life). Context means a lot to me.

He HAD to have been fucking with the DJ. There's no way he could have no idea about all those direct questions.

He didn't compare himself to Tom Petty in terms of musical ability. He used Tom Petty as an example of someone who is a musician, not a ______/musician. Tom Petty has even done some acting (I know he was in The Postman, not sure if he was in anything else). Clearly when Billy Bob is with his band, he wants to be viewed as a musician, not an actor/musician.

Yeah, but when Tom Petty goes to a late night show to tout his latest movie, you know his musical career is going to come up. And, yes, he will, in that instance, be seen as an actor/musician.

What a dickhead. Not supposed to mention he's an actor? Please. If he wasn't an actor him and his shitty band wouldn't be on the radio show anyway. It's not like the DJ focused on that, he just mentioned it in the intro and ole Billy Bob went asshole.

I'm sure Tom Petty wouldn't mind talking about his music, but apparently Billy Bob didn't want to talk about his acting. The DJ didn't respect that, so Billy Bob didn't respect the DJ. It's normal to agree ahead of time what will and won't be discussed. If the host doesn't like the terms, they don't do the interview.

Don't they show ads before or between videos? They might use cookies to keep track of whether you've watched an ad before you try to watch a video, or something like that.

I didn't see an ad before this video, but I think I have in the past.

Yea but Billy Bob is an actor/musician. When your lifestyle is in the public eye, you can't just pretend it doesn't exist that's ridiculous. Anyone who hears his music is going to think "actor first musician second" and this DJ isn't changing that any no matter what he says.

He wasn't talking about his acting. He simply mentioned his other occupation and BBT turned into a douche.

not possible, he is well known as an actor first, you cant decide people should forget what youre well-known for and you sure as hell shouldnt be an ass about it when the only reason hes on the god damn show for his music is because he is well known actor.

he was good in Armageddon as the NASA director.

but i guess he doesn't want to talk about that when the subject is music.

maybe he can write a song about it.

maybe there is a song about it.

"i'm a musician FIRST and an actor second, GODDAMNIT".
