Full Text Now, in case it disappears:
Wow, just when I thought I had time to breath along comes an amazing, and fairly well sourced rumor.

Word in the industry has it that Peter Moore, corporate vice president of interactive entertainment business, entertainment and devices division at Microsoft (Aka head of Xbox), will be soon leaving the company to head up EA Sports.

Microsoft has been quite close with Electronic Arts for a number of years now and Moore's not exactly a Microsoft lifer, having come to the company in January 2003 from his position as president and COO of SEGA of America. And remember Moore ran the sports business at Reebok and is a huge sports fan.

On the other hand, moving from Veep of Microsoft to head of a EA division sounds like it could be a step down for him, so for now take this with a grain of salt, but I expect to hear some sort of official word on this later today.

This just blew my mind. I hope he makes them improve Madden.

EDIT: If true, I don't know why anyone in his position would sign on to defend this crap.

EDIT2: Now there's no link from Kotaku's main site. So odd, the direct link still works. I'm sure by the time I get home from work they'll make a liar out of me for saying that, too. Quick, someone else read it! :p

EDIT3: A gentleman by the name of Don Mattrick is taking his place. He looks... fun.

Wow, in no way would I ever want to see Moore leave Microsoft. Personally, I think Moore is one of the better straight-shooters in the industry, and tells it more like it is more than just plain hyperbole and PR-speak. Granted, he still hypes his product, but he's more real than anyone else (i.e. Reggie Fils-Amie and anyone in the Sony camp). I think he's helped Microsoft tremendously since he's signed on, and has done a marvelous job heading the 360 (besides the enormous hardware failure problems, which is more on other's shoulders than his).

Here's hoping that he stays in his current spot for years to come .

That's too bad, he was the only guy throughout the XBOX E3 presentation that actually could present. The other execs were overly cheesy and didn't mask too well the fact that they were reading from a script.

Well EA is paying him over a half million dollars a year with opportunities for bonuses up to 75% of his salary.

Idk how much MS paid him, but it sounds like EA bought him.

No one buys anyone away from Microsoft. Microsoft is worth $294 billion, EA is worth $15 billion. Nuff said. Whether it's fair or not, he's taking the fall for the whole hardware defects $1 billion charge thingamajig.

Considering his responsibilities and the size of the market and amount of revenue worldwide he was responsible for with Microsoft versus his new job at EA, I'd safe it's safe to assume he is taking a paycut by moving to EA Sports. Of course, I'd trade places with him any day still. :)

It could also be a location issue.

Sounds like wherever EA is going to put him is where his family is.

If you bother to read/listen to the interviews, he is moving back to the San Francisco Bay area. Before he took the job at MS, he lived there. As President of EA's newly created EA Sports division, he'll be able to live there again.

There's something called reading between the lines my friend. If you went by what companies officially say, no one ever gets fired, they all just happen to resign for other personal reasons on their own accord. But hey if you want to believe Peter moving to EA because he wants to be "closer to his family", feel free. That $1 billion+ charge Microsoft incurred the weeks before was probably just a coincidence.

Peter Moore didn't design the hardware.... the 1 billion dollar charge isn't his fault, and he seemed to handle all the resulting publicity well.

Pay cut? LOL. Unlikely.

He didn't design it, but was he in the chain of command which ultimately approved whatever cost saving design which could have contributed to the defect rate? Regardless of whether he had any involvement, the buck stops at the top. Whether it is fair or not, that top guy gets all the glory during the good times and the criticism when it's bad. So when the higher ups look for someone to account for that $1 billion charge to the company, it's not the engineer making $80k/year they go after.

As far as him handling the publicity well, I will say he's a smooth talker. First keep denying there is any problem at all, then apologize for it once enough pressure mounts. That's how you do it in the corporate world.

The first thing he needs to do is put ***** co-op play back in the NCAA football games. Who in the hell over at EA decided it was OK to remove co-op from football games? Co-op has been a staple of these games from just about since they first appeared and now it's been gone from the NCAA series since the start of this current generation.

Do you not understand how a corporation works? Even if it wasn't his fault, he was responsible because of his position. Microsoft shareholders and board of directors have not been pleased with how the gaming division has been doing, and incurring a one billion dollar loss is not going to sit well with them at all.

I don't know that they would have canned him, but I bet he would be under a lot of pressure to get things under control, which probably would have made it difficult to manage the division as he saw fit. Why do you think EA pumps out sequel after sequel? Its not because they actually think that's best for gaming, but because its safe and brings in money.

I'd be surprised if he wasn't easily pulling in more money than he'll be getting at EA, but he also had more responsibility. Not to mention the stock options. I would say he's taking a pay cut, but he's also taking a lower stress job, so its worth it. The part about it being closer to his family is a common excuse.

Good riddance, really. Peter single handedly destroyed the Dreamcast, the only reason the Xbox got off the ground is due to the amount of funding Microsoft has.

 The Dreamcast died because Sega was in piss-poor financial shape, because of the PS2 hype train, and because the big third parties like EA shunned the Dreamcast from the beginning.

Not quite. Obviously I was exaggerating when I said he "single handedly" did it, but he played a major part in it.

The man is garbage, pure and simple.

I've seen this on several message boards now and on its face it seems rather extreme. But I wasn't paying attention to the backstage workings of the video game industry at all back then, what exactly did he do?
