going back to this thread...
supposedly just a broken power supply that need replacing. (this is for a LAPTOP, not a desktop. i've taken apart my psu, removed the fan, and resoldered in a panaflo, but i won't touch laptops.) $79, plus labor. alright, sure beats $500+. yesterday, i call 'cause it's supposed to be ready:
"uh, it's not booting. we're not sure why."
today i call:
"uh, still not booting. something wrong with the partition, we're trying to fix it, but we probably have to reformat. if the hard drive still works. we may have to replace that, too."
so i brought it in for a new power supply, and all of a sudden it doesn't boot? it still worked up to the second i brought it in. fvvvvvvck. :(

***psa*** backup early and often, 'cause you probably won't be able to once you actually need to. i've learned my lesson the hard way.

edit: they said the hdd has a corrupt partition, might be a bad sector. is the only thing that can repair it a reformat?

2nd edit: if you can help out with a bios not recognizing the hdd at all, please click here

For one, why the hell did you bring it into a computer repair shop because the power supply went out? :Q

For two, I'd be so fsckin' pissed if they hosed my drives, they would probably be buying me a new computer.

Don't try to blame them. If the PS went dead, it could have taken a few shots at the hard drive on the way out :).

Man wouldn't that suck to own a repair shop. People bring their machine in and say the power supply is dead (when really the whole system is shot), and then they try to get you to pay for everything else saying you broke it.

i agree with you in theory, but i don't believe the system was shot when i brought it in. if you read the old thread, when the battery was in, the computer worked fine. turned on, turned off, everything was kosher. it just wouldn't charge, or power on when it was only connected to the ac adapter.

Agreed......I've done repair work on several systems in the past
few years that were hit with a power spike that hosed the psu and the
mb and knocked the partitions out of the drive.

Almost as bad as having one hit by ligthining.

You know those adapters that let you plug a laptop HD into a regular 40-pin cable? Did you know that if you plug the drive into one of those backwards, it's really, really, very, very bad for the drive?

For the record, it was my boss that discovered this.
