I have heard from an inside source that motherboards with the existing LGA1155 chipsets (excluding B65, Q65 and Q67) will support Ivy Bridge processors with an appropriate BIOS update. Obviously, some features such as PCI-E 3.0 will not be supported by some of the older boards.

*Sits back and waits for the resale price of 2500k's plummet as people update their rigs with IVB

Hope this is true there is plenty of people who don't need pci-e 3.0 but would love the performance ivy offers without replacing their motherboards.

I need a new computer. Was going to buy one in 2 months. Should I wait longer?

Nice. If TuxDave worked on Ivybridge, I will get one to replace my current 2600K. If he hasn't worked on that project then I will wait until I actually need an upgrade.

This is nice to hear, I will get a Ivy Cpu drop it in my cheap H61 board then get another cheap H61 board and make this i3 2100 a HTPC

I read this a little ways back. The 1155 & 2011 boards are all going to support IB with a BIOS update. There will be a new chipset as well I read that will add pcie 3.0 for the mainsream platform, native usb 3.0 and 2 extra sata3 ports under the intel controller for the IB-E plarform.

I doubt they will plummet. Haven't looked too much but it seems like a 2500K can get around $180. I expect them to sell for $160 or more even after the IB K variants are out. I also expect IB to work about 5% better at the same clocks (disregarding any gains from the integrated video) so its just that and maybe a better overclock potential that you will be getting.

... and 2 extra sata3 ports under the intel controller for the IB-E plarform.

I haven't seen anything about that. Where have you seen any info on the X79 replacement?

I agree.

It's odd how past-generation Intel processors can retain their price level for quite a while. e.g. Amazon still shows twelve i5-760 processors in stock for ~$225(!) (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...5-760&rh=n:172282,n:!493964,n:541966,k:i5-760)

I'm not referring to the price of new units. I'm referring to the price of used units on trading sites such as FS/T.
I'm expecting them to drop down to about $140-150. Unless, IVB is extremely expensive on release.

Like the 7970s

I think that the 7970s will have a pretty significant price drop once Kepler comes out.
Unless Kepler turns out to be a total BD-esque dog of a chip, AMD will probably play the pricing game with nVidia over it.
I expect to see 7970s go for about $400 after Kepler comes out.
