CONFIRMED: 71.84 ForceWare fixes DEP+UE2 Problem

After I bought my A64 system back in November, I installed all the games we play at our LAN parties (UT2K4, BF:V, HL2\CS:S, WC3). I never played anything except HL2 until about mid-January, until I finally tried to see what my performance was in some of the others (I still haven't fired up Warcraft 3). I fired up UT2004, and was pleased with the performance, and I decided to quit. I press quit, and the damn computer blue screens (that doesn't happen at all, so it cought me off guard) and restarts. At that time, I was using the 61.77 driver. I then just thought it was something with UT, and waited 'till the next patch was released. I waited for the next patch, got it, and installed it. I figured, "Oh well, maybe I'll look on the net for some answers." I did, and saw that it was my damn A64, NVIDIA drivers, and DEP getting in the way :| . I turned off DEP, and it worked peachy. I have been using it like that since that discovery, until now. I went through the 66.93, 67.03, 67.66, and finally, the new 71.84 drivers. All of the 6x.xx drivers did nothing, but with the new 71.84 drivers, I thought I would give it a chance, since, after all, these are a new "Series" of ForceWare drivers. I re-enabled DEP, and fired up UT2004. Guess what? After playing for about an hour, I decided to quit, and, it worked, straight back to the desktop 😀 .

I don't know if anyone else has had this happen to them, but I do want to know for sure if things have been fixed. It looks like it on my end.

BTW: There is nothing mentioning this problem, or a solutionm, in the release notes of the driver.

EDIT: Its official, NVIDIA's 71.84 drivers FINALLY fix the UE2+DEP problem that has persisted since, well, forever.

I also tried UT2K3 with the 67.66 driver, and I get a BSOD. With the 71.84 driver, I get nothing but bliss!
Finally, I tried Unreal 2. With the 67.66 driver, again, BSOD. With the 71.84s, it doesn't crash.

I had a buddy of mine in California try the same thing, and his findings are the same. I'm Happy 😀 😀 😀 😀

I'm not a LAN party kinda guy so forgive me if I am missing something here, but why couldn't you just add the games as exceptions? or did you try and it not resolve the issue?

No, I tried that, and in my net travels, others have too, and the only way to avoid the bug is to COMPLETELY disable DEP. That really sucks, but I am now currently churning away with DEP up and running, with zero problems.

Gamingphreek, have you heard anything new? You're the "Driver-Dood", so you may be able to help.

Well, i don't have time to test this out right now, but i will try to later today.

I have the 67.66 drivers, & they certainly aren't fixed, as i had to completely disable DEP to avoid BSODs.

However, are you sure you had the 61.77 drivers before? Because i was able to run the 61.77s with DEP enabled with no troubles, & it was after those that that bug showed up, for me anyway.

I may actually forgive nVidia after all if the 7x.xx series have fixed that.

BTW, do the 71.84s do okay with HL2 water & stuff, 'cause i know some of the 7x.xx ones were doing the piss water thing?

Yes, I am sure that I had the 61.77 drivers, as I was pissed that about a week later, after I had downloaded the 61.76 drivers, there was a new one 😉 . I couldn't have DEP on and play UT2K4 with any other driver but the new 71.84 version, which, while I'm glad its fixed, I wish it had been earlier.

I haven't had any problems with HL2\CS:S and water with these drivers BTW. I did with the 71.81 version, but I didn't run those for more than about 10 minutes 😛 .

Hmm, i know the 61.77s worked great for me, since they were the first drivers i ever used for my 6800 GT.
Very odd.

That's besides the point though.

After work today i will test teh 71.84s.

OK, well, post ur results up here. I have a feeling that they will be similar to mine. I just hope that I found something here...

Okay downloading now.

I just noticed there are some 76.10s out now!
Edit: And it looks like lots of people don't like them, lol...

Woohoo 😀

It looks as if nVidia has finally fixed the DEP bug!

I am unsuccessfully trying to BSOD with UT2k4, but it's not working 😀

Thanx geforcetony for pointing this out, as now i can run newer drivers, & have DEP turned on.

OK guys, lets try to keep things on topic here. That is great news from both of you, but it HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL TOPIC. There are other threads that pertain to those topics, but not this one. If you don't have anything to post in regards to the OT, then, well, don't post at all. I learned the hard way, and I am trying to let you both know the easy way. You're both relatively new here, and I wouldn't want you to get flamed bad like I did. So, just post ON TOPIC please. Thanks.

Anyway, anyone else had a good story to tell about the 71.84 drivers and DEP + UE2?

well n7 said that people didnt like the 76.10 drivers, and that was like saying "i do"

so it wasnt really off topic...kinda...whatever

DEP is fixed in all 71.xx drivers. And yes, the 71.84 drivers do work well except for the incorrect temps, which can be easily fixed.

how do u turn the DEP back on...ive forgotten what the words were, its on NoExecute or something now, i have XG 71.84;s but DEP has been off since i can remember

1.) Right click My Computer...Click Properties
2.) Click the 'Advanced' tab
3.) Under the 'Performance' category, click Settings
4.) Click the 'Data Execution Prevention' tab, then enable by clicking 'Turn on DEP for essential...' or the other one, whichever you choose.

Hope this helps.
