After I bought my A64 system back in November, I installed all the games we play at our LAN parties (UT2K4, BF:V, HL2\CS:S, WC3). I never played anything except HL2 until about mid-January, until I finally tried to see what my performance was in some of the others (I still haven't fired up Warcraft 3). I fired up UT2004, and was pleased with the performance, and I decided to quit. I press quit, and the damn computer blue screens (that doesn't happen at all, so it cought me off guard) and restarts. At that time, I was using the 61.77 driver. I then just thought it was something with UT, and waited 'till the next patch was released. I waited for the next patch, got it, and installed it. I figured, "Oh well, maybe I'll look on the net for some answers." I did, and saw that it was my damn A64, NVIDIA drivers, and DEP getting in the way :| . I turned off DEP, and it worked peachy. I have been using it like that since that discovery, until now. I went through the 66.93, 67.03, 67.66, and finally, the new 71.84 drivers. All of the 6x.xx drivers did nothing, but with the new 71.84 drivers, I thought I would give it a chance, since, after all, these are a new "Series" of ForceWare drivers. I re-enabled DEP, and fired up UT2004. Guess what? After playing for about an hour, I decided to quit, and, it worked, straight back to the desktop 😀 .
I don't know if anyone else has had this happen to them, but I do want to know for sure if things have been fixed. It looks like it on my end.
BTW: There is nothing mentioning this problem, or a solutionm, in the release notes of the driver.
EDIT: Its official, NVIDIA's 71.84 drivers FINALLY fix the UE2+DEP problem that has persisted since, well, forever.
I also tried UT2K3 with the 67.66 driver, and I get a BSOD. With the 71.84 driver, I get nothing but bliss!
Finally, I tried Unreal 2. With the 67.66 driver, again, BSOD. With the 71.84s, it doesn't crash.
I had a buddy of mine in California try the same thing, and his findings are the same. I'm Happy 😀 😀 😀 😀
