confirmation of dead cpu needed

xp1800 smells nasty and small vague dark spots around edges of core + non working system = dead cpu right?

would putting a dead cpu into a mobo and trying to start it up be harmful to a system?

sounds dead to me, only you can tell though. Test it out, it won't damage anything, just wont boot.

Pull cpu out and smell it good away from the system...Sounds like a cooked cpu to me!!! What happened???

Only sure test is to swap it into another working system.
