Configuring Wireless Access

I have attached a Linksys WET54g bridge to my laptop using the supplied Cat 5 cable. From previous reading , I understand that I should be able to receive WiFi from this the same as I would using a PCMCIA or built-in WiFi card. Assuming this is true, how do I configure the setup to make this happen? As it is now, all I get is a "Limited or no connectivity" message. The bridge is set at its default settings and I've attached a Hawking 9db external antenna to it, so it shouldn't be an antenna problem. I want to use the setup to access free WiFi Hotspots. Thank you.
