Configuring Win2k Adv. Serv. as a Gateway?

Hi all,

Good news and bad. The good news is that I've come across a quad processor Proliant 5000 to replace my current gateway/web server/ftp server with. The bad news? For some reason, the OS I am currently using (SME Linux 5.5) will not install properly. So, I'm left with the idea of trying to use Win2k AS for this. Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to configure this as a gateway? I use a PPPOE dsl connection, and the server has 2 nics. I know that I configure one for NAT and DHCP, but I'm hazy on how I did this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Funny thing, I have a 4way 5000 as well. And I'm running DNS, DHCP, dual-nicced and routing as well.

The routing piece is controlled in the RRAS tool (Routing and Remote Access Services). Read the doc there, the GUI is relatively intuitive, assuming you understand TCP/IP routing.

Woodie,

Are you following me around, man? :D j/k

Anyhow, I've used the RRAS to set up NAT and DHCP when I was on ISDN, but I got the immpression from reading that it would not work since I'm trying to use a PPPoE connection. I suspect the 3rd party PPPoE software as the culprit, since 2k doesn't have it native like XP does. I would really like to run Linux on it, but most distros will crash on install due to a bug with the BIOS misreporting ram. My favorite distro, SME, does not, however I do not have drivers for the 2nd nic which is an EISA pull out of an older Compaq 4500. FreeBSD is an option also, but I hear it does not scale as well for 4 procs. Win2k Server ran like a DOG on this system too. :(

I had the opportunity to leap into the Unix world and use FreeBSD last week, and it's a monster. A p233MMX with four network cards handled routing a 9mbps incoming net connection to three other networks while doing packet filtering & weighted routing ... along with http caching (squid), DNS (named), dhcp and NAT for one of the three networks that had 250 people it!

And the sick part? Used < 64MB of ram, and had an average CPU usage of 16%.

** in love with freebsd **

Randal,

I am fond of FreeBSD as well, however it has been my experience that it is a little bit picky with hardware. It's the price you pay for a stable OS I suppose...

I direct connected my W2K box to a PPPoE DSL connection, and found the best way was with a freeware PPPoE client for W2K called RASPPPOE. Recommended by the ISP, <300K, and just works w/o all the crap software that SBC sets up for you.

I agree with Woodie in regard to RASPPPoE. Wonderful little access manager. Much faster and less overhead than anything my ISP could offer me. If you use DSL with Win2k, go get it now!
