configuring printer on a mac

To start, I don't know much about macs. Was helping someone who has a home network of mostly pc's, with one mac laptop. One PC has an HP DeskJet 5440 printer connected to it, and shared out. I would like to print to it from the mac. I figured out how to connect in, and from the big list of printer drivers in the mac, found "HP DeskJet 5400 series" and used that. And it prints. But it prints sooooo sloooowwwwwlllllyyyyyy (like one page per minute), I believe the mac is defaulting to print at the printer's maximum dpi. But I can't find any settings anywhere to change any print settings...

Any help? Thanks

Well, I'm not sure if all the printers are exactly the same, but for my Canon iPixma, I go to System Prefs/Print & Fax/Options & Supplies.../Utility/Open Printer Utility.

Hope that helps.
