Configuring Dell 700M

Where is my last $100 better spent?
1. Should I get with the Pentium M 735 ( 1.7) and XP Professional?

or

2. Should I get Pentium M 745 ( 1.8) Windows XP Home instead?

I have never used XP Home. This lappy is for my wife who is in college. Will be using Office 2003, Photoshop CS2, Minitab Statistical Software. I want this computer to last.

Will be outfitting it with 1.2gig ram, dvd burner, 60gig hdd.

Professional is mainly useful for connecting to networks locally and remotely; doesn't have many other advantages. See if your wife's college sells XP Pro for cheap

There isn't a huge diff between 1.7 & 1.8, but the rule of thumb is to buy the fastest CPU you can afford.

1) Don't order the extra 1GB module from Dell. You can pick one up from Newegg for less than $120 shipped.

2) Your option 1 is good, but you probably don't need XP Pro. Configure your 700m with the 4-cell battery (standard) and add an additional 8-cell for $99. 🙂

Like you said, I was gonna buy the extra ram from newegg.

If I'm reading this right, I should get the laptop with the 1.7 cpu, 256ram, add a 8 cell battery, from dell. So you're sayaing spend the $100 on the battery and not on XP Pro or the upgrade to the 1.8 cpu.

That's a different approach but I see the logic.

Correct.

Has your wife gone to a Dell kiosk and actually tried using a 700M? Has she actually said she likes the keyboard and the size of it? That's a lot more important than the difference between a 1.7 and a 1.8 GHz CPU.

I live in South Carolina and according to the Dell site there are no Kiosk's in my state. Is there another notebook with a similar "cramped" keyboard that I might find at BB, CC, Staples, OM, OD, CompUSA?

Can someone please post a link to or email me a "lifesize" picture of a 700m keyboard. Since I can't get my hands on one, I can at least print one out and kind of get a feel.

This is the first picture that shows up you do a Google search for large images of Dell 700M:

http://www.davlanbaumn.com/pblog/archives/dell700mf.jpg

And Dell lists the dimensions as:

Weight: 4.1 lbs. (1.86 kg)3
Thickness: 1.5 inches (38.1 mm)
Width: 11.7 inches (297 mm)
Depth: 8.5 inches (216 mm)

Thanks for posting the link to the picture...I saw that days ago when I searched for 700m along with some much better ones...

Like I said in my earlier post, I'm looking for a "lifesize" picture. I want to print it out and have an exact print, to scale, of the keyboard.

If you found better pictures days ago then just print one out, genius.

You've got the picture and you've got the dimensions of the laptop. What more do you want? Do you have some sort of Photoshop version that doesn't allow you to scale images? You're not even making sense.

I just got my new 700m and I love it.

2.0 ghz
1gb ram
80gb hd
dvd+-rw

I was a little scared about the keyboard, but after one day I feel comfortable with it.
amazing display!

My only complant is that there is no function key/button to disable the touch pad.
