Configuring 5.1 Surround sound

I recently built my new shuttle sng41v2 and got my Logitech Z640 5.1 Speakers. I am having trouble with setting up all the channels to play independently. I am using the onboard 6 channel audio that comes with the shuttle mobo, as well as soundstorm to configure my setup.

Basically i set it up for 6 speakers and if i choose the digital surround sound setting then i hear music from the center and the front speakers, and rear sound is muffled through the front speakers. If I choose the Dolby Digital encoding setting, then i hear music through each of the 4 satilite speakers, but nothing comes through my center channel, even when i check the box to create a center channel.

I have double checked all the connections, everything is correctly placed, so am I limited by my mobo? Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks

is there not a specific 5.1 setting? I would think 6 speakers would not work correctly. On my Audigy2 5.1 and 6 speakers are completely different (ecpecially now since you can buy 5, 5.1, 6, 6.1, 7 or 7.1) If it's not an explicit 5.1 option try upgrading drivers/software for your card.

Just by looking at your post, unless it's a typo, I would think that it's not working because you're trying to configure 5.1 speakers to 6 channel sound. If you match the speakers to the channel type, it might work, but I'm just guessing here.
